Located on a family farm in Peterborough, Little Wellies Day Nursery provides a unique educational experience within a farm environment. Run by Clare and Tilly, the nursery offers endless opportunities for adventure, fostering a love for learning and nature among its young attendees. Due to high demand, the nursery faced a growing waiting list and needed to expand its capacity with a new classroom space that could be used year-round.

Building a conventional extension would have been costly and time-consuming, so they began looking for an alternative.

They chose a Big Hat Tipi in Forest Green, installed permanently on a raised timber base, with panoramic opening panels to bring plenty of fresh air through the space. Two entrance porches provide flexibility, while inside they've created a wonderfully warm classroom with wooden furniture, rugs, games and fairy lights wrapped around the tipi poles.
Outside, the decking extends beyond the tipi to create another usable area, complete with picnic benches and fencing.

The result is an outdoor classroom that feels completely at home on the farm (and importantly, has enabled Little Wellies to increase capacity and welcome more children).
One particularly interesting piece of feedback from the nursery is that staff and children using the tipi had reported no illness-related absences, which they attributed to the constant fresh airflow through the classroom.

A lovely example of how an outdoor classroom can solve a very practical space problem without losing the character or ethos of the setting it belongs to.

Designed for a very different purpose to the structures we manufacture today, the traditional tipi was portable, adaptable and remarkably clever in its simplicity.
Its distinctive form has since become recognised around the world.
As designers and manufacturers of modern commercial tipis, we think it’s important to understand and acknowledge the history behind the architectural form that continues to inspire what we build today.

Because, afterall, there's so much magic in a Tipi. The form has endured for thousands of years. And for good reason.

A Baby Tipi with a BIG impact. 🤎

We recently installed a Baby Tipi at Hillside Secure Children’s Home, creating a dedicated outdoor space for the young people who live there.

And it’s always lovely to hear that the experience was as positive as the finished result.

From schools and forest classrooms to specialist education and care settings, our smaller Baby Tipis can create sheltered outdoor spaces for learning, connection and time spent outside; without requiring a huge footprint or lengthy build schedule.

Our Managing Director, Hayley, is finally tying the knot in beautiful Portugal! 💍🇵🇹

As a proudly family-run, female-led business, we believe the big moments are worth celebrating together - so some of the Tipi Team will be swapping TipiHQ for Portugal to celebrate alongside her.

And, perhaps most remarkably of all… our MD is actually putting her out-of-office ON. 😂

Between running The Tipi Company and being a busy mum of three, holidays have historically had a habit of becoming working holidays. But for three very special days, the laptop is staying firmly closed while she seals the deal. ❤️

FARM DIVERSIFICATION: Could a Tipi be your next move?

The landscape of farming is changing; and diversification is becoming an increasingly important part of the farm business.

72% of farm businesses in England had some form of diversified activity in 2024/25.

And across all farms, diversified activities generated an average £22,400 in net income per farm — equivalent to 31% of average Farm Business Income.

So what could diversification look like for your farm?
For some, it could mean accommodation. For others, food, experiences, events or creating a destination around the landscape they already have.

And the rural visitor economy is substantial.
67,800 tourism-related businesses were registered in rural areas of England in 2023/24, accounting for 12% of all registered rural businesses and 15% of the rural workforce.
