Today we were at the famous Bill's on Cliffe High St. We've both been visiting with wives, children & friends for breakfast, lunch & dinner from when it was a greengrocer's shop more than 20 years ago; now it's the flagship of a nationwide chain & they don't sell greens anymore... Breakfast, brunch & dinner now... Bill is still to be seen from time to time. The experience has always been curate's egg; sometimes great & sometimes not; I'm pleased to say that today was a good day.

If you eat inside, it's pretty noisy; good buzz but not the place for an intimate tete a tete. Today we were able to sit outside & watch Lewes go by from the pavement of the pedestrianised street; shorts & shirtsleeves: very European. We hadn't booked but at 10.00 on a Tuesday morning we were given a choice of tables.

The food... Richard chose the Plant Plate. Now he is vegetarian but not vegan. This meal is VEGAN. He pronounced the faux bacon to be delicious but the scrambled (presumably tofu) eggs disgusting. Also his toast came with no butter. To be fair, he concedes the menu was pretty clear; OEGS rather than eggs was a clue. Anyway, he'd been to the gym & swum beforehand so he demolished the lot anyway.
I had the Traditional Breakfast which was uniformly good; lovely crispy bacon, quality sausage, couple of fried eggs with still runny yolks, tomatoes & well cooked mushrooms. Slight let down was the toast which had no colour & not enough butter, though more was brought when asked for. We had more toast too. They'd run out of mustard! Shock horror!..
Coffee was an interesting game. I asked for a long black & I got an Americano... I sent it back & got brought another Americano... Finally I explained what a long black is & got brought one. I'm trying to educate the baristas & of Lewes... I'm a pedantic git aren't I?

Value... My meaty breakfast was £10.50 & surprisingly the vegan one was £13.50 but there was more food on that plate. Good value we thought.

The service was delightful. We had a good time.

I just signed the campaign calling to Jeremy Hunt to back the ambitious plan to give the NHS the staffs it desperately needs. Will you join?

Richard & I had both eaten here before, though not for brunch. It's a big, buzzy place & also possible to eat outside. Not the place for a quiet intimate chat with noise from other tables & music but a good atmosphere.

I had the Lounge Breakfast - basically the full English. A generous amount of food; best were the good quality meaty sausage & well cooked back bacon but overall it was a bit dull & uninteresting. Why do almost all places serving allegedly grilled tomatoes serve them practically raw? I asked for a decaff long black coffee; I was handed a full cup of brownish liquid which I pointed out was not a long black as it had far too much water in it. I was told they don't do long black... Hmm... I was given a less watery version which still tasted weak & nasty.

Richard had Shakshuka which is poached eggs, tomato & red pepper sauce, spinach, crispy chickpeas, parsley & yoghurt with grilled flatbread. Very generous & tasty he said. He also had a nice cup of English breakfast tea so all in all did better than me on food & drink.

Both dishes were £10.25. I felt that was pretty average for a full English - which was also pretty average. The Shakshuka was very good but feels expensive for a veggie dish.

They do a good range of dishes - meaty, veggie, vegan & gluten free.

The service was not good. It is supposedly possible to order your food using a QR Code but to do that there is a laborious process to register & give bank details etc which I didn't want to do... I just wanted breakfast for goodness sake. There is also the possibility of ordering at the bar which would be a pain if they were really busy but in this case it was no problem... apart from the coffee... If this review feels a bit grumpy, it's because the experience made me feel grumpy rather than taken care of.

Fuego Lounge gets three & a half stars.

We are Chris Ettridge & Richard Waring. We are Lewes actors & during the pandemic when there was no work to be had, we amused ourselves by making a series of very short sit-coms about two grumpy old chaps doing their best to survive lockdown... Grandpa Corona...

We meet up for breakfast in town every now & then to chew the fat while we're chewing some food. Since we’ve been allowed out again, we’ve been to lots of the surprising number of places serving cooked breakfasts; many have been good; some have been terrific, some disappointing & one or two frankly pretty poor. We thought it would be fun to share our thoughts with you so that in a few months there should be a review of all of them here in one place. We’ll give you our opinions about the environment, the food, the value for money & the service & at the end of it all, we’ll do a rating.

Public health warning... It’s only our opinion of our experience on the day we visited.

It’s a charming bright room at the back of the shop, not very far up School Hill, with a bay window which on our visit at 9.00am had sunlight streaming through. Richard is vegetarian & often has the full veggie experience but today he was on a diet & ordered scrambled eggs on toast with tea (£5.95). Chris, as is his wont, had the full meaty English with decaff coffee (£9.25).

Richard declared the scrambled eggs to be good, although a bit tasteless but thought this wasn't a fair critique as he has his own hens and their eggs almost explode with flavour. He also thought the scrambled eggs could have been a tad looser in texture but was impressed by the generosity of the portion.... So much for his diet. The excellent sourdough toast was, we think, from Flint Owl Bakery across the road.

Chris’s full English was very good indeed; proper meaty butcher’s sausages, nicely fried egg, bacon a bit leathery but a good flavour; fried potatoes which is a nice & unusual touch – I suspect they’re sliced from left over baked potatoes but none the worse for that. A good plateful & well presented.

We thought the meals were remarkably good value for money. Time was, not too long ago, when £9.25 for a full English would have seemed dear but since inflation has taken its icy grip, anything under £10 feels cheap. Our bill for an extra coffee & a tip came to £24.65.

The service too was charming, friendly & efficient; can’t ask more than that.

All in all, a definite 5* for Robson’s.
