Fiona and Kirsty both work at LOROS. Their experiences at the hospice have led them to embark on a series of fundraisers and they are currently raising £10,000 for a Machu Picchu trek.

Fiona is a young people and transition key worker and has been at LOROS for 5 years in August.

Fiona said: “LOROS is the third hospice I’ve worked at. Both were amazing, but LOROS is utterly special. Someone comes in looking distraught; I’ll say ‘are you okay?’ and they’ll say ‘I am now’. They’ve had a horrible experience and now they’ve come to LOROS, where the care is exceptional and they definitely feel that everything will be better now.

“Everyone goes above and beyond all the time, and cares for each other too – staff and volunteers. It’s an amazing place. A gentle, calm feeling, everybody smiling.

“There are so many kindnesses that I witness every day – an ultrasound of an unborn baby so a grandma can see their grandchild, or a pamper party because a parent won’t see their child’s 21st. These things are so special. There’s a massive amount of compassion and empathy. A real understanding.”

“People bring in funeral donations the day after the funeral. They don’t have to come in that quick, but they do because LOROS is a lifeline. In the worst possible time of your life there’s this place with people who can help you to carry on.”

“It’s probably 10% we want to go to Machu Picchu and about 90% we want to help LOROS. There’s nowhere else like it.”

“We’ve suffered redundancies, but that has not changed the care at all. Staff were terribly upset for colleagues, but I don’t believe any patients picked up on it. Everyone was utterly professional."

Kirsty is a Senior Therapy Assistant at LOROS and has previously worked as ward clerk and counselling intake facilitator.

She said: “I grew up in Leicester and was aware of LOROS but didn’t know what it was until my uncle came here 14 years ago. He was admitted on New Year’s Eve for a short spell, then four months later came in and died at the hospice. I remember the first time I walked in, it felt like I was being given a hug. It still feels like that now.

“Two years later my dad was admitted to the inpatient ward. I had a young family and it was so important for me to know that when I left dad after visiting that he would be good hands and well cared for by the staff. My dad died after a few short weeks at LOROS. I was so grateful that both he and I felt safe during that time.

"As the months passed, I knew I wanted to give back and when I saw a ward clerk role advertised, I applied and got it. I knew I just needed to be at LOROS. A big part of the role was contact with family members, being a listening ear, which led me to work within the counselling team for 6 years. I am now Senior Therapy Assistant in the Enablement team, working alongside our Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists, supporting patients admitted onto the inpatient ward and within Day Hospice. It’s a ‘hands on’ role.

"The hospice can feel scary when people initially arrive, there can be a level of anxiety of what being in a hospice means, but pretty soon we see that lift as we watch families become ‘a family’ again as the worries and strains of being ‘carers’ are removed.

"There are a million little stories of wonderful care that touch my heart. A friend was admitted to the ward with pancreatic cancer over the Christmas period. Unable to eat, the nurse asked his favourite drink. When she heard it was Jack Daniels, she had ice cubes made from it. His family never forgot that kindness and went on to raise thousands of pounds for the hospice. People will always remember care like that. The amount of people who tell me how comfortable and safe they feel here – it’s amazing.

“I didn’t know Fiona that well until we signed up for the Great Wall of China trek in 2024. Those endless training walks were therapy and it’s built an amazing friendship between us. I remember it was New Year’s Day, we were out on a walk and Fiona said ‘this year I’m going to say yes to everything’. The next day the Machu Picchu trek came up. It was meant to be!

“I feel I owe LOROS so much. For the amazing care my family experienced, for the friendships I’ve developed and for being part of such an incredible place.

“LOROS teaches you to make every moment matter. You only get one life and you need to make the most of it.”

It's time for another 💛

This week, we're sharing some touching words from a family member reflecting on the care their dad received at LOROS.

When someone is approaching the end of their life, having the right care and support can make such a difference, both for them and for the people who love them.

At LOROS, we're here to help patients feel comfortable, cared for and at peace, while supporting their families through some of life's most difficult moments.

Knowing we've been able to bring comfort when it matters most means so much to our team. 💛

Over the past few months, we've shared the inspiring stories of three of our incredible LOROS nurses – Andrea, Michelle and Sian – as they prepared to take on the Run Leicester Festival Half Marathon. They were also joined by Hannah, Safeguarding Lead at LOROS.

We're delighted to say they all did it! 😍👏

Each of them had their own personal reasons for taking on the challenge, but all were united by their passion for LOROS and the patients and families we care for every day.

We know how much hard work, training and courage went into reaching that finish line, and we couldn't be prouder of them.

Not only do they make a difference through the work they do at LOROS, but they've gone above and beyond to help raise vital funds for the Hospice too.

You're absolute superstars! ⭐

Earlier this month, a group of incredible LOROS supporters took on the challenge of climbing Snowdon at night, raising vital funds for the hospice. 🌙⛰️

Among them was a team of 13 from The Mead Educational Trust, who have raised an amazing £5,000+ for LOROS. 👏

Sarah Ridley, CEO of The Mead Educational Trust, said: "At TMET, we are proud to support initiatives that make a positive difference beyond the classroom and within our local community. The Mead Daredevils' successful Snowdon at night challenge is a wonderful example of the dedication, teamwork and generosity that exist across our Trust. Their efforts have raised vital funds for LOROS, a charity that provides invaluable support to so many local families."

This isn't the first challenge the Trust has taken on for LOROS. Last year, members of the team bravely completed a skydive, raising more than £6,000 for the hospice.

Thank you so much to everyone at The Mead Educational Trust for your continued support. We think the name 'Mead Daredevils' is more than deserved! 👏

For 30 years, thousands of people across our community have played, collected and supported the LOROS Lottery – raising an incredible ✨£24 million for the Hospice✨ along the way.

But behind that number are thousands of individual choices to support hospice care.

People who have played every week for 30 years. People who play in memory of someone they love. People who donate their winnings back to LOROS. And thousands more who simply choose to give a little each week because they want to support their local hospice.

Throughout , we’ve shown why that support matters.
Hospice care is expert care, comfort and dignity. It’s practical and emotional support for families. It’s helping people celebrate birthdays, weddings and Christmases, enjoy the sunshine in the garden or simply share a favourite drink with someone they love.

And making those moments possible takes a whole community.

So, as we celebrate 30 years of the LOROS Lottery, we want to say an enormous thank you to everyone who has been part of its story.

The Lottery may be about chance, but the difference our players make to hospice care is real. 💛

A HUGE thank you and well done to everyone who ran for LOROS today in the Run Leicester Festival! 💛🎽

We’re so proud of every single one of you for going the extra mile to help make hospice care possible for local patients and families.

Andrea Burton, Registered Nurse Associate at LOROS, is taking on the Run Leicester Festival this morning alongside 5000 other runners. Andrea will be running the half marathon to raise vital funds for LOROS Hospice and to support the patients and families she cares for every day at work. Here’s her story.

“If you’d told me a couple of years ago that I’d be running half marathons and raising money for LOROS Hospice, I would have said, ‘Don’t talk rubbish!’ But this Sunday, I’ll be taking on the Run Leicester half marathon once again, proudly wearing my LOROS vest and raising money for a charity that means so much to me.

My running journey began with a 10 stone weight loss journey. During this journey I discovered a new passion for running, starting couch to 5K in May 2025 and joining a running club. I loved seeing my progress, and before I knew it, I’d signed up for my first Run Leicester half marathon.

In October 2025, I completed my first half marathon in two hours and 18 minutes, raising money for LOROS. The atmosphere and crowds cheering were incredible, and I felt so proud crossing the finish line wearing my LOROS vest.

Since then, I’ve completed more races, including the Rothley 10K, and now run regularly. I've even entered the London Marathon ballot a few times, something I never imagined I'd do! Running has become so much more than exercise. I find it therapeutic, and I always feel better after a run.

The biggest motivation behind my running is LOROS. I've worked at LOROS for over five years, and I absolutely love my job. I'm so proud of what we do here, and I want to do everything I can to support the Hospice and help make sure we're able to care for even more patients and families in the future.

My connection to LOROS goes back much further than my career here. My mother-in-law, Jackie, was cared for at LOROS before she died in 2015. I remember going with Jackie to her chemotherapy appointments, and one day she turned to me and said, "Andrea, you should do this as a job." I've never forgotten those words.

I'd always been interested in end of life care and had wanted to work at LOROS for a long time. I used to work in the community as a Marie Curie nurse, before an opportunity came up at LOROS. I applied, got the job, and I've been here ever since.

I've also gone back to university as an adult to complete my Nursing Associate training, which was a huge challenge, but something I'm incredibly proud of.

For me, working at LOROS isn't just a job. It feels like it’s what I was meant to do.
Every day, I support patients and their families through some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Sometimes it's about providing care and making someone more comfortable, but so often it's the little things like sitting with someone, listening to them, having a conversation or simply being there to hold their hand.

Recently, I met a patient who was feeling very anxious after arriving at LOROS. I spent some time talking with her and getting to know her. The following day, she called me her guardian angel. She told me that I understood her and that she felt I really 'got' her. To build that connection with someone in such a short space of time is so special.

During my nursing degree, I'd come across a quote that really stayed with me: "Don't count the days, make the days count." I shared it with one of my patients, and at the time I didn't realise just how much it had meant to him.

A few days later, I came onto the ward and he'd had the words printed and laminated above his bed. He later had a canvas made with the quote to hang at home, and his family told me how much it meant to them. The words were even included in his order of service. That experience had such a profound impact on me that I went on to have the quote tattooed on my arm.

It's moments like those that remind me why I do what I do. When people are facing some of the hardest days of their lives, knowing that something you've said or done has made a difference means a lot.

I also wish more people understood what hospice care is really about. People often assume that LOROS is a sad place, or that coming to a hospice means they won't be going home. But that's not always the case. There's so much laughter here and so many special moments. We have fun with our patients, we dress up, we share stories, and we support families as well as the people we're caring for. It's about helping people live as well as they can and making every day count.

That's why fundraising for LOROS is so important to me. I want us to be able to open more beds and continue providing the amazing care that I've seen first hand.
Whenever I'm out running, I wear my LOROS vest with pride. I even tell my patients about the races I'm taking part in, and they love hearing how I'm getting on.

When I line up at the start of the half marathon, I'll be thinking about how far I've come, the patients and families we support every day, and how proud I am to be part of LOROS.”
