"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. 🎀

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. 💗

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

💗 This year, Sam took on running, cycling and swimming challenges to help raise awareness for CoppaFeel!

After being diagnosed with cancer at 19 and later undergoing a double mastectomy, Sam chose to celebrate her body and encourage others to know their normal.

We're honoured that Sam shared her story as part of Tickled Pink.💕

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

We said goodbye to our lovely bakery colleague Denise after 45 years of service with Asda.

She was one of the first bakery supervisors at just 19 years of age. I’m sure you’ll agree she deserves a long and happy retirement after such dedication. We’ll miss you Denise.

What a great way to celebrate Yorkshire Day with our West Yorkshire Fire Service heroes ❤️

It was a pleasure to have the firefighters from Stanningley fire station at Asda Pudsey to host a safety campaign weekend. Giving out valuable advice on water safety, fire prevention and e-bike/scooter safety, you could even have a sit in the fire engine 🚒 which was a massive hit with both the young and old.

Thank you for making time to come along to chat with colleagues and customers because we know how super busy you all are at the minute 🚒

England’s fantastic win against Mexico makes this the perfect time to celebrate a grassroots clubs inspiring the next generation of players.

We’re proud to support Pudsey Juniors with a £500 Young Futures: Active Young Lives grant from the Asda Foundation. Pudsey Juniors provides football opportunities for children and young people aged 3 to 18, offering everything from fun introductory sessions to competitive league football. The volunteer-led club is committed to creating a safe, welcoming environment where children from all backgrounds can take part, stay active and develop their confidence through sport.

The funding will help purchase essential football equipment, including training and match-day kit, enabling the club to continue growing and providing opportunities for even more young people. The club also hopes to expand its offer to include more girls’ teams, disability football and walking football sessions in the future.

As part of a recent community event, Asda also enhanced the day by donating match balls, training balls, refreshments and children’s activity resources, helping make the event a great success for local families. By investing in clubs like Pudsey Juniors, we’re helping young people stay active, build friendships and enjoy the positive benefits of sport for years to come.

She thinks it’s all over ... it is now! Our wonderful colleague Claire is retiring after over 29 years at Asda Pudsey.

Claire is one of our most loved colleagues and is part of the fixtures and fittings here. I think we might have to get a plaque made in her honour for checkout no 9!

Claire is a lovely lady and will be very much missed by everyone. Asda Pudsey is saying farewell to a legend.

Huge congratulations to the 13 colleagues from our store who have clocked up an incredible combined total of 350 years of service working for Asda – what an achievement!

A big shout out to our colleague Lesley (holding the three balloon) who’s just celebrated 40 years with us. She and her long-serving colleagues were invited to attend the Big Asda Celebration in Harrogate, and we hope they all had a fantastic day. Thank you to them all for their years of wonderful service.

Well done, Carrie!

Well done, Carrie!

When Carrie from our Pudsey store spotted an elderly customer getting upset and looking confused at the checkouts she immediately stepped in to help.

The lady, who's in her 80s, couldn't find her purse, couldn’t remember who she had come with, where she lived, and had no ID or phone with her. Carrie decided to pay for her shopping while trying to work out how best to help her. After talking to her for a while and trying in vain to find out her address, Carrie was about to raise the alarm when the lady's son came rushing in – he'd been frantically searching for her in nearby shops. He was extremely grateful and reimbursed Carrie for the shopping.

Carrie said: "I just wanted to help her as I just care about everybody. She was a lovely lady, bless her, very happy and smiley." Store manager Gary said: "This is a fantastic example of putting our customers first and living our values every day. The lady's son was deeply appreciative of the care and support Carrie had shown. She's a real credit to the team."

Today is Farsley Festival which is a wonderful free event in our local community.

It’s a fantastic fun day for all the family so it was a pleasure to pass on a donation of refreshments to Christine, one of their wonderful volunteers.
