***** UPDATE *****
Sadly I am unable to open tonight. Hopefully the swelling will subside enough for me to open tomorrow. I will have to make that determination in the morning.
Many of you know I have suffered with knee troubles for a long time. I have been trying to carefully manage the situation and mainly I can get by. However this is now impacting my health long term and it is the reason why I am having to give up the shop. I have just spen 3 wonderful days in the Cotswolds- doing plenty of walking. Yet last night, descending the simplest of steps resulted in the knee joint completely giving way and my knee swelling like a basketball. After already waiting 8 weeks for a MRI scan, I got sent by the Doctor today to A&E to see if they can fast track it - seen as I’ve already waited 8 weeks. Just spent 4hrs in A&E & Radiology to be told that I’m not actually on the list in the first place! Doctors say I am, hospital says I aren’t! What a great system we have!!
A big shout out to Avril & Carolyn at Kirkheaton surgery for trying to sort this for me - this is definitely gonna cost me some chips when I reopen!!

❤️ A little update from New Road Fisheries ❤️

Due to the exceptionally hot weather today, we may need to close earlier than usual.

If you’re planning to call in for your fish & chips, we’d recommend visiting earlier in the day to avoid disappointment. With temperatures set to soar into the mid 30’s again, we will be OPEN for LUNCH, but remaining CLOSED FOR FRIDAY TEA TIME.

As a traditional fish & chip shop without overhead extraction, the temperature inside the shop becomes extremely high during weather like this. It creates very difficult working conditions for our team, and with understandably fewer people wanting hot food in such hot weather, it simply isn’t viable to keep the fryers on later into the day.

Our staff work incredibly hard, and their wellbeing always comes first. We hope you’ll understand why, on days like today, we sometimes have to make this difficult decision.

Thank you so much for your continued support, kindness and understanding. We never take it for granted, and we’re very grateful to have such loyal customers.

We’ll be back open as normal tomorrow lunchtime, and we look forward to seeing you then.

Please share this with anyone you know who may be wanting to visit us this evening.

Stay safe, keep cool, and thank you for supporting New Road Fisheries. 🐟🍟

England play D.R. Congo at 5pm Wednesday 1st July. As such we have taken the decision to open and close earlier than usual that evening in anticipation that everyone will be watching the match.
We will be open at lunchtime as usual, 11:30-13:30. Then if anyone fancies a quick and easy tea before K.O, we will re-open 15:00-16:30.
Also, if Thomas Tuchel is watching, I am 52, have 2 bad knees and couldn’t run a bath, but I’m still available for call up!

27/06/2026

Due to the temperature remaining very high today we have taken the decision to remain closed.
Thank you in advance for your understanding.

**********URGENT************
Due to the extreme heat in the shop we will be closing at 6:30pm tonight.
If you want your fish & chips tonight - come and get them now!!
Thank you for your understanding.

It’s been a tough day so far at New Road Fisheries. It’s just too hot! There are several factors I have to consider in heat like this:
1. Safety. It is well over 45° in there with the pans on and that is not a safe working environment for a sustained length of time.
2. Equipment. It is too hot to leave the fish out, so the constant opening and closing of the fish fridge door is causing the fridge to work too hard - and this time last year it died in similar conditions and was not a cheap repair.
3. Overheads. I have to turnover a minimum amount to make it worth while paying wages, having the gas on etc, and in this heat a piping hot meal isnt at the front of everyones mind.
As such I have had to take the difficult decision to follow Mandy’s decision at Dalton Fisheries and close early tonight (6pm) and remain closed tomorrow (Thursday), with the intention of reopening Friday - weather permitting.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding.
