Back in February, when I first came to Kirkcaldy, Brew Beginning was my first stop. In that time, Vicky has become a friend.
"My name is Vicky and I own Brew Beginning on St. Clair Street in Kirkcaldy.
For me it's about people and my love for coffee which I discovered when I worked at Costa for many years and then I decided to venture out on my own, put all my savings into it and at the time, my life seemed to do a massive 360 and somehow I pulled it off. It was the best decision I ever made, all for the better.
Through having the shop, I've been able to create a small community here which I'm proud to serve and be a part of. Customers became friends and come in everyday, I've got Charlie, Lorraine and Neil and they'll just chat away to one another and I've seen amazing friendships bloom here.
It's a small set up here with 5 tables but its never held us back, I like it this size and there'll only ever be one shop. The college actually reach out about tips on how to start a business, business gateway also featured me in a piece, like a spotlight on the shop. They offered me a grant but thankfully, I was able to do it all myself.
I'm actually from Leven. My Mum, Davina, works in The Windsor too, she always spoke about running a cafe, she'd do the baking and I'd do the coffee so. She comes in here and does my baking too, so we get to spend time together which is the best. She's teaching me to bake too, she's my best pal. Mums my absolute rock and we're hoping to go for a meal with for Mothers Day, she deserves the world"
At this point, as I tend to do when people speak so fondly of loved ones, I ask Vicky to send her Mum a text when I leave, telling her she loves her. We both take a moment to wipe a few tears away.

"I love making people happy when they come in, you never know what someone is going through on the inside. All it takes is a "how you doing the day". My customers talk to me, open up, it's like some sort of therapy cafe and I'm glad that they feel safe to speak to me.
One day, a woman came in and she just broke down, sadly, she had just lost her Mum and I asked how she was and she literally broke down, she said she needed to get out and she sat in here for hours, only having one coffee in that time. She told me later, that it meant the world to her. To give her some space to breathe, to not be at home. Money is irrelevant. She returned a few days later with flowers and thanked me but to me, it was the most human thing to do"

"Since you were in that day, it just got busier and people kept seeing they saw me on Facebook. I also won Best New Business at the Fife Business Awards in June and honestly, I was just so happy. Even now, people still come in after seeing me, you were a big help but also in a personal way, you opened up my eyes to stuff and I appreciate that more than you'll know, you came at the right time that day so thank you, for everything"
