💀 Memento Mori - Parkin, c.1794

Parkin’s Memento Mori is an emblematic work in the European tradition of Vanitas painting - art that reminds us of the passing of time and the inevitability of mortality.

The artist looked back to 15th-century conventions, at a time when Vanitas paintings increasingly featured symbols of memento mori, emphasising the fleeting nature of human life. Here, the skull is presented inside a trompe l’oeil box, creating the striking illusion of a three-dimensional object.

This is a rare surviving example of its kind from 18th-century England.

Happy birthday, Thomas Sheppard 🎂

Born on this day in 1876, Thomas Sheppard became the first curator of Hull Municipal Museum in 1901 and played a huge part in shaping Hull’s museum collections.

A passionate collector and self-taught expert in archaeology, geology and natural history, Sheppard helped establish museums across the city and championed the stories, people and industries of Hull and the East Riding.

Over a century later, his legacy lives on in Hull’s museums and collections. 🏛️
