Just a quick one: due to the heat outside, and our kitchen being 10 degrees hotter, the kitchen will be closed today and tomorrow.

The temperature for Saturday keeps changing, so we'll reasses closer to the weekend.

Just a quick PSA: All under 18's must be completely off the premises (that includes the car park) by 9pm. This isn't a "house rule", it's the law and as such is non-negotiable.

We get it - other venues may allow kids in until 10pm, which is great if their license permits that. That specific part of the license appendix is venue specific, and the license for this venue has stated 9pm for at least the last 4 years.

Thanks for listening to me moan. I don't enjoy being a moaning-minnie, but some individuals seem to think the law doesn't apply to them.

In my house, my lovelies, the law absolutely applies to everyone.

Time for a weekly update that's about 3 weeks late.. so it's a long one!

Let's talk Function Room:

πŸͺ‘ Bar Stools πŸͺ‘
Thanks to the amazing margins on our Stir-Fry Sunday menu, I've been able to throw 100% of the profits from those dishes at the Function Room and finally get some bar stools! We have 10 in total for that room, five for the bar and the rest are for some poser tables that should arrive early next week. That will mark the start of the table replacements, as the current table-tops seem to have become more damaged in the last 2 months than they have since we moved in last April. This has forced me to bring forward the timeline for their replacement.

🎱 New Pool Table 🎱
The Function Room now also has it's own brand new pool table. The cloth is a darker-than-usual green to accent the steadily growing number of fake plants that have appeared in the room over the last few months. Sadly though, it's not a sexy Richmond table like the one in the main bar, so we have a rather plastic'y looking black frame.. which I may replace in the future. It's still set at Β£1 per game and details for when it can be used will be worked out over the next few weeks (as that room is a bomb-site when it's not in use for an actual function/event). We were supposed to get a trolley and a hardcover delivered at the same time but apparently the depot didn't get the memo. Hopefully they arrive before Thursday next week so we can move it outta the way ready for Lyric Lounge and the Sunday Jam Session. Finger's crossed! I have not yet purchased proper cues for this room yet - you will need to use your own cue or the provided council-sticks that came with the table.

🍸 Shelving and Displays 🍸
I finally managed to get around to finishing off the staining for the backbar and we got the shelves up - now we can start building our displays and positioning stock properly. For now we'll have one of the sections dedicated to O'Donnell Moonshine (and better presented than it's main-bar counterpart, in my opinion..) while we still use that brand for our cocktails. Once chaos has died down after the summer we'll start phasing O'Donnell out for something else, which will remain a secret for now.

πŸ›‹ Fixed Seating πŸ›‹
I had a meeting two weeks ago with our BDM who was particularly impressed with what we're doing in there, and rather than just chucking a free barrel of beer our way (which is the custom) they're going to look at bearing the brunt of the cost themselves for the seating's upholstery. This is fantastic news, as not only does it mean I can use revenue on other projects further down the line instead of lumping Β£5k on some sofas, it also means we're doing well enough now for the brewery to provide some backing. When we took the pub on last April on a 1 year trade-at-will lease it was impossible for them to shell out any amount of dosh on the building because there was no lease security. Now that we've made it clear we're not going anywhere it's much easier for them to work with us.

🎯 Misc 🎯
Still no sign of this magic dart-board from the brewery, so I'll just get our own. I'm also investing in a "very" large TV for the corner. More news on that later.

Now let's talk foods!

πŸ₯‘ Stir-Fry Sunday πŸ₯‘
As mentioned further north in this essay, the profits we've made so far on the Chinese menu alone has enabled me to purchase new bar stools for the Function Room. To further enhance this effort I've devised a box-deal (see photo) as "Box for One". Chinese Chicken Curry, Egg Fried Rice, Mini Sweet & Sour Chicken Balls, a Handful of Chips plus a can of drink for Β£13.50. We think this is a good deal and will allow me to continue working on the Function Room through to completion without restricting ourselves to timelines and funnelling other outgoings (the largest being the weekly beer order for barrels.. by a long shot!). There is also a Vegetarian version. This will be available from this Sunday.

πŸ– Carvery πŸ– ???
I'm in the process of procuring some equipment so we can run a carvery on Sunday's throughout Autumn and Winter this year. Roasts have died a death and I'm not really sure why as they're always available and you haven't necessarily needed to book since March unless you're a large group. So we're looking at introducing a carvery and I'm opting for quantity control only on the meats - veg, stuffing, gravy, yorkies, etc will all be fair game under an "All you can eat" style arrangement. Thoughts?

❓ Other Menu Items ❓
The Spring/Summer menu has been out for a while now and there doesn't seem to be many clear winners for "most purchased" dishes. This is both good and bad - it's great that everyone is trying different things, but bad because I don't know if that's because it's all good food or you guys are figuring out what your favourites are. I'd really appreciate some feedback - let me know what you like, what you don't, what doesn't work for you, what could be added/changed/removed, etc as that will massively help me when the time comes to plan our Autumn/Winter menu later down the road. Marmite dishes are very much a hit though, so they will be staying regardless!

🎍 "What about outside" 🎍, I hear you say?
Matt has been doing a great job of keeping the outside of our premises tidy and weed-free and we're now almost in a position to obtain new benches. I'm opting for six-seater round-style picnic benches instead of the standard style, mostly to prevent pints going flying when two people decide to sit on the same side of the bench, not remembering how see-saws work.. which isn't necessarily my problem.. so I do this for you guys. πŸ’œ

πŸ“… Upcoming Events? πŸ“…

⚽️ We will not be open on Sunday night for the England game. We've given it a lot of thought and after talking with some of the regulars we've opted to close at the usual time of 10pm. No secret parties, no invite-only, just closed as normal. We do hope though that if you're venturing out into town to watch the match that you stay safe and don't get into too much trouble! Hydration is key.

🎸 Next Thursday is Lyric Lounge, then on the Sunday is our Car Boot followed by the Sunday Jam Session.

There's actually loads more going on behind the scenes, but rest assured that when it's time for any news to be made public, you'll hear it from me first.... not from the rumour-mill ran by Kettering's finest.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Jam Session from 5pm!

We're also just finishing off the prep for our Chinese Takeaway menu tonight, which is also available from 4pm to eat-in, takeaway or on Just-Eat (now I've scheduled the times correctly..)!

A temperature reading of 35 degrees was read off our temp-gun on the prep counters themselves.. which are all steel, which are all reflecting heat around the kitchen. The wall thermometer says it's currently 41c. It's hot in there.

It's a no from me. However, I am making fresh rolls to-order to keep everyone going!

πŸš— Don't forget Carboot is this Sunday! πŸš—

We've had quite a few more sellers reserve a pitch this time, so if you're thinking about coming down with a table it'd be a good idea to let us know before hand!

πŸ“£ Time for a long-overdue weekly update! πŸ“£

Lets talk about some of the things that have already changed over the last few weeks;

🍲 We launched our new menu - the new Marmite dishes have been selling really well and you guys have had some great feedback on the warm baguettes, so I'm very pleased with how those are going. The condiment carriers have had a little upgrade - we started off with sachets of sauce, then we upgraded to the red and brown sauce bottles for ketchup and brown sauce (which actually feels like a step back with all the issues they've caused) so from today onwards there are proper HP and Heinz Ketchup bottles in the carriers. I'll make use of the larger bottles in normal cooking or at my Bap Station for carboots - we won't be refilling the bottles in the carriers with the cheaper alternatives, I'd rather pay a little more for a better quality product.

🎰 Pull the Ball on Friday nights has been going well and the jackpot is slowly climbing! If you fancy your chances at the jackpot or free shots and pints, grab your ticket when you're here on Friday evenings!

⚽️ The World Cup posters went up around the bar - there are multiple chances to win cash prizes with our sweepstake, a brewery-sponsored selfie challenge and some free pint games during match times.

βœ‰οΈ You may have noticed at the bottom of the car park a new InPost Collection/Drop-Off point. This was installed at the behest of the brewery to allow a more accessible location for your parcel activities. We know there's a Post Office 3 doors down from us, but the brewery didn't, and I had no idea they were installing it until after they'd sent a contractor to pour the foundation for it. It isn't live on InPost's website yet.

πŸ’¦ The gent's urinals now flush!?! We've been told by several plumbers that we've called out to look at what's going on that it's just a build-up of limescale after the water not being turned on for so long, and then nothing happening when the water is on. Thus, no flushing. So our Trev has had a quick look and replaced the batteries in the flushing mechanism.. they now flush properly. As I'm writing this he's gone to grab some kit so we can sort out the draining issue then we're back in the gent's for the day until all the issues are sorted. Soda bombs are my favourite!

🧹 Internally we've been having a good clear-out. When we moved in there were so many boxes of tatt and useless rubbish in the building, especially in the cellar that is no good to anyone. Spending some time re-organising hasn't really been high on my list of priorities, but I'm glad we're slowly getting through it as this provides us with almost a whole new room for.. other things..

Now what about things that are coming up?

🎱 We're still waiting for the new pool table for the function room, which is now looking like first week of July for it's arrival.

πŸ›’ I'm creating a food-box programme for local residents; we'd deliver on a Tuesday if you'd like a delivery but if you're happy to collect then you get the same sized box twice a week (Tuesday and Friday). The aim is to provide people with either a fresh produce supplement for larger families, or a good sized box of fresh and dry foods for people living on their own or as a couple. Sometimes it's difficult (or very expensive) buying fresh food in smaller quantities, especially meats that you might not get through before it starts to turn. We'll be looking at obtaining some funding from the council to support this venture initially, and then once we get it going we'll be able to use the profits to benefit local community groups and to support the amazing volunteering efforts around our town. More on this at a later date.

🧧 Sticking with the food theme; we trialled our Stir-Fry Sunday menu at the weekend, and considering we didn't advertise it at all prior to 2pm it went incredibly well! The menu has now had some tweaks and I've added some amazing Korean options, too. This will launch properly this coming Sunday. Why Chinese food? It's the best cuisine to help me use up all of our ingredients so I'm not throwing as much away at the end of the week. And.. Chinese food is amazing!

Remember: I don't do portion control, so you're getting far more food per dish than at a normal takeaway! This will also be available on Just-Eat on Sundays. The prices on Just-Eat are a little more expensive than they are if you were to order at the bar to takeaway as Just-Eat takes a 30% cut of the order value.

This will sadly be the case until we can afford our own driver, then the costs can go back down, but that won't happen until the volume of deliveries increases massively throughout the week.

I think that's enough for now.
Thanks for reading my essay!
