Begonia grandis subsp. evansiana is a fabulous plant that we’ve been growing for the last decade. Unlike the rest of its clan this particular Begonja is amazingly resilient. It’s interesting reading its hardiness rating on the RHS website where it says it won’t survive being frozen but in my experience it’s tougher than that. I love how freely it seeds around and if you grow it near gravel it will merrily spread itself around. The seed is best sown on the surface of some good quality multi purpose soil and then covered with a fine layer of horticultural grit. Germination can take a while but when it happens it’s fast! I love the flowers it produces in late summer but for me it’s the beautifully shape leaves that look the part.

I got wet for this one….mainly because the leaves aren’t going to hang around much longer on this Aesculus x mutabilis ‘Induta’ and every year I see them, ponder how good they look and the next day 97% of the leaves are no longer around….
When the new leaves emerge in the Spring they are shrimp pink in colour before turning to a pale yellow and then a lovely fresh green. Striking apricot coloured flowers are religiously produced every May/June before the intensely coloured leaves take their turn in late September. Not a large tree and suited to a regular garden if space is tight. Fully hardy and one to keep an eye out for. This beauty (as with almost all our trees) came from

The obedient plant or Physostegia virginiana ‘Vivid’ is a an electric violet purple with very striking spikes of flowers that get to approximately 60-100cm tall. Very much a late summer planting option for a sunny spot (it will grow in light shade but does best in sun)
The obedient part is in relation to its individual flower heads that have a kind of hinged joint so that the flower having moved it will stay in position which is less than convincing. Needless to say that’s the last reason for choosing it so just focus on the aesthetics! I should have also said it’s a great flower for pollinators 🐝
