Under our previous name we were pleased to be included in 'Scotland the Best', a guide to all good things north of the border. We enjoy being able to bake on the premises daily and cook cosy hot meals. We also refresh our salad bar daily and will serve hot, cold or open sandwiches on locally made or speciality bread. We're one of the few places that cater for vegan and vegetarian customers. We lov

e turning our freshly ground organic and fairtrade coffee beans into customised coffees, and a day wouldn't be complete without the aroma released when making a pot of Suki fresh leaf tea. We hope you find a warm welcome when you arrive and a happy tum when you leave!

Itโ€™s a cheek to introduce the fabulous Emily four years after she started working in Elliceโ€™s refill shop! Regardless, here she is ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿคฉ! Emily started as a volunteer after Covid and is now a valued fixture. Fun factโ€ฆEmily is coeliac, so is hyper aware of cross-contamination in the shop and the cafe ๐ŸŒพ. Here she is telling us some of her favourite, and less favourite ๐Ÿคญ products. Lots of the products in our refill shop are used in our cafe menu. This keeps the food items turning over and fresh. The shop was our attempt to reduce plastic waste in the cafe and ensure our ingredients are responsibly sourced. We love our wee pantry, we hope you do too ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜Šโ™ป๏ธ

True to their word, the national leader and lead candidate for South of Scotland list came for lunch today! It was a pleasure to meet, and serve, Alex Cole-Hamilton, Duncan Dunlop and their team. Huge thanks to Euan Robson and local candidate Ray Georgeson for reserving the table and continuing to encourage the election conversation ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜Š

Never a dull moment! This was about people as much as politics. Genuine pleasure to have a chat with First Minister, John Swinney, this lunchtime. Fraser baked the scones and Denise made stonking soup ๐Ÿ‘Œ. Thanks to the dance group who shifted tables to make room, and to Aliโ€™s Art group for managing the wee disruption. We very much appreciate the lovely folks from the SNP Kelso & Jedburgh team for choosing us as their lunch spot. (In the interest of impartiality Fraser says heโ€™ll be wearing a red tie tomorrow and alternating blue and green napkins!) Any other candidates coming for a cuppa? All welcome ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜Š

In the quiet charm of Kelso, history isnโ€™t locked away in museumsโ€”it lives beneath your feet. Set into the cobbles lies a humble horseshoe, marking the very spot where Bonnie Prince Charlie is said to have ridden through the town during the Jacobite rising of 1745.

Make sure to search for it during your visit to Kelso and feel the history galloping beneath your feet.

Introducing SANTU ๐ŸคŽโ€ฆ For the past few weeks weโ€™ve been testing and trialing COFFEE 04, from Santu Edinburgh. Although weโ€™ve been with our previous supplier for over twenty years, and a little nervous of change, we took the opportunity to try something different. Santu was founded in 2018 by a Brazilian ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ท and a Brit ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง. Washington and Erin, who lived and worked alongside the farmers for several years before their move back to the UK, import directly into Edinburgh where they roast in their amazing space at 23 Union Street. This direct trade between producer and buyer really suits our ethos at Cafe U. There are so many fabulous things we can say about Santu, but what we absolutely love is this personal connection to the coffee farmers. The beans we are currently using are grown by the Tozi and Fin families, who have farmed land together in Espรญrito Santo for generations. Espรญrito Santo, Southeastern Brazil, is a tiny, mountainous state, with very rich biodiversity. The wide variance in altitude, terrain and climate allows Santuโ€™s farming partners to produce a fabulous range of award-winning coffees. We are delighted to bring their darkest roast, COFFEE 04 to Cafe U. This is a pulped process coffee, profiling a rich body, with hints of chocolate and nuts. Always served within a few days of roasting, always 100% arabica and always produced with good working and environmental practices. At Cafe U we will continue to better our barista skills to do justice to Santuโ€™s beans. We would encourage you to give Santu a follow and check out their reviews โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ
For those of you who love our previous house blend, you are not forgotten ๐Ÿฅฐ. If you would prefer to stick with your familiar favourite, we completely understand. Just ask for Tiki when you order. We will do our best to get it right for you ๐ŸคŽ๐ŸคŽ๐ŸคŽ โ˜•๏ธ
