Wow so much to say about and it's only lunchtime 🤯
1) The people who are now "boycotting" us because of using halal beef gelatine in a tiny fraction of our products are surely not boycotting every other business that stocks halal products? Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, primary schools, cafes, takeaways? No, you're not - you're targeting small business because you think your bullying tactics have more leverage with us. Just don't buy the product if you don't like it.
2) Unless you've managed to curate a 100% ethical consumer profile, I fail to comprehend how THIS is the hill to die on. Buy clothes made in sweatshops? Have a pension that's unethically invested? Buy coffee, sugar or bananas that nearly all the time aren't sourced ethically? Then you're a hypocrite who, dare I say it, has latched on to a political hot potato that's being used by certain echelons of society to spread division and hate.
3) We have so many Vegans who shop with us who undoubtedly think it's completely wrong to use any animal products and feel strongly about this. But guess what: they don't boycott us, they enjoy the products we make that they can eat, behave like grown ups and accept that we are all human beings with freedom of thought and respect each others' decisions. Seems we've completely lost the ability to disagree with someone's stance and yet comprehend it and accept it with respect while voicing another opinion.
We've always said we won't ever be an 100% organic or 100% fairtrade bakery because there are so many complex issues behind the sourcing of each product. We do really well with sourcing as well as we can and we are always looking to improve. We've chosen a product (again in a tiny tiny proportion of our overall offerings) that doesn't exclude our Muslim customers, in favour of excluding a few people who seemingly think it's worth boycotting a small independent over something they don't agree with. And I stand by that (while also wanting to find vegan and Halal mini marshmallows).
