Today marks 17 years since Clifford Freeman purchased and took over St Mary’s Hall Hotel.
What was once a struggling hotel has grown into the established 4-star hotel it is today, known for its exceptional customer service, welcoming atmosphere and outstanding restaurant.
What makes the story even more remarkable is that Clifford had never invested in or been involved in the hospitality industry before, but he understood something fundamental — that the values that make a successful farmer can also build a successful business.
From a young age, Clifford learned five core values that have stayed with him throughout his life:
🌱 Responsibility — doing what needs to be done, every day, whatever the weather, season or circumstances.
💪 Work Ethic — understanding that meaningful results come through persistence, commitment and honest hard work.
🤝 Respect — for people, for nature, for the environment and for the wellbeing of those in our care.
⏳ Patience — knowing that the best things take time. Crops grow, animals mature, and success is built through care, consistency and patience.
🌍 Stewardship — looking beyond today and making decisions with the future, our resources and the next generation in mind.
These are not simply values Clifford brought into hospitality — they are values he has lived by his entire life.
And perhaps one of the best ways to measure the last 17 years is through the people we’ve welcomed through our doors.
☕ More than 150,000 breakfasts served, that’s more than 150,000 happy guests.
But running a hotel here on St Mary’s while also being a successful farmer in Gloucestershire means Clifford has spent an extraordinary amount of time travelling between his two worlds.
Again and again, often setting off at 2am, he makes the long drive down to Penzance or Land’s End before continuing his journey across to Scilly.
Over the past 17 years, he has made more than 650 trips, travelling approximately 309,400 miles — around 6,500 hours on the road.
That’s the equivalent of almost 9 months of his life spent sitting behind the wheel, travelling to and from Scilly.
Why?
To make sure the hotel is running as it should.
To support our team.
To look after our guests.
And to make sure St Mary’s Hall continues to be the very best it can be.
17 years of hard work.
17 years of dedication.
17 years of early mornings, long journeys and big dreams.
From a struggling hotel to the 4-star St Mary’s Hall Hotel we are proud of today — it has been quite a journey.
So today, we celebrate Clifford, our wonderful team, our guests, and everyone who has been part of the St Mary’s Hall story over the past 17 years. 🥂
