Our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar. The history of The Sovereign goes back over 160 years to the reign of King George IV when a local entrepreneur, Seth Senior built a brewery on the site in 1829. Legend has it the business was started with a borrowed sovereign and many believe that in commemoration of its origins, a gold coin is still buried somewhere on the premises.
