Some roles don't come with a job title. Here's the one we reach for.

Meadow Manager: the person who watches a meadow long enough to know what it needs, then acts with a light hand. Part ecologist, part farmer, part patient observer.

At Goren Farm a meadow manager holds the knowledge of which species are returning, which are struggling, and when to cut, graze, or simply leave well alone. The seasons are the schedule.

You'll find them walking the meadows at Stockland in the early morning, checking seed set, noting what the bees are working, planning the next step in a restoration that spans years, not weeks.

The title doesn't appear on a business card. It shows in how the farm looks: species-rich grassland, native seed ready for harvest, a landscape that has been listened to. 🌾

Follow us to meet the people who hold this knowledge and the places it shapes.

Most people walk straight past the proof. It is right there in the meadow, in the seed heads, in the way the land holds itself through August.

Back in 2009/10 we were given a commendation at the House of Lords, in Britain's Most Beautiful Farm Awards. It was awarded on merit for conservation, sustainability and profitability in farming, and we were honoured to receive it.

The real record of that isn't a certificate on a wall. It lives out here. In a restored meadow. In every seed head ripening and setting for next year.

Getting a meadow to this condition takes years. Knowing when to cut. Knowing what to sow. And, just as importantly, knowing what to leave alone.

We have been working this way for a long time now. The land carries the evidence, if you know where to look. 🌾

As summer starts to fade away and autumn comes creeping in, the every day rhythm of the farm shifts towards all things apples. Apple picking has started in ernest out in the orchards, and these ancient apple trees will provide us with bounty for our wonderful farm house c***rs and apple juices. Very soon the 350 year old apple press will be working full pelt, turning apples into liquid gold.

Head on over to Goren Farm to browse the amazing selection of apple juices we have on offer, sample the c***r and on Fridays and Saturdays see the press in action! And it's not only our own apples that we press. If you've got apples of your own why not book a slot to turn your own harvest into juice, pressed and bottled here https://www.goren.co.uk/pages/apple-pressing

The shadow of your chair stretches long across the paving stones, and somewhere behind you a scone is being split open.

This is a Devon summer afternoon in our tea garden. Stone walls draped in green, the hum of conversation drifting between the wooden tables, the warmth of the sun on your back. A Devonshire cream tea in front of you and nowhere else you need to be.

The meadows, adventure trail, gardens and cafe are open this weekend 11am to 5pm, Wednesday to Sunday. Come and experience it for yourself.

Late August is the best time to sow wildflower seeds, and it's the window most gardeners miss completely. Sow now, or wait a full year.

We've been harvesting and sowing seeds from these ancient Devon meadows for over two decades, so here are the three things that make or break a meadow.

1. Sow in late August.
Late August to October is the best sowing window. The earlier in that window you sow, the better your germination rate. Miss it and you wait another year.

2. Prep the soil first.
Remove docks and nettles before you sow. Mow as short as possible, even scuffing the surface slightly. Seeds need direct contact with soil to germinate properly.

3. Cut at the right time.
Cut in early June or late September, not both. The later you cut, the more seeds drop naturally. Cutting too early can harm late-flowering plants like betony and devils bit scabious.

A wildflower meadow takes 4 to 8 years to fully establish. Getting this first season right gives every plant the best possible start.

Whatever the weather, a cream tea always hits the spot.

We have plenty of under cover seating in our c***r yard for wet days, and plenty of shade in our beautiful tea garden for when the sun gets a bit much, so whatever the weather throws at you, you're sure to find a little slice of cream tea heaven here at Goren Farm.
