🍱 SMALL PLATES

Introducing Small Plates.

I bloody love food that’s made for sharing.

When we were in Japan, some of my favourite meals weren’t necessarily the big main dishes. It was sitting around with loads of little plates in the middle, trying a bit of everything and going back for whatever was best.

That’s where the idea for our Small Plates came from.

We wanted a section of the menu where we could have a bit more fun. Things you can grab alongside your Karaage, share with the table or just absolutely smash on your own.

Loaded Fries. Pumpkin Croquettes. Spring Rolls. Pickled Cucumber Salad. Creamed Corn.

Some are inspired by things we tried in Japan, some take inspiration from Japanese flavours, and some are just ideas we’ve had and thought “f**k it, that sounds good.” 😂

That’s the fun of So Solid.

Japanese inspiration, our own ideas and a whole lot of flavour.

There are two types of Japonica rice grown in Japan, both with a short, round grain giving it a glutinous texture and making it easy to pick up with chopsticks. Uruchimai (ordinary rice) is used in sushi and sake, whilst mochigome is used for chewy desserts like mochi 🍣🍙

Introducing Karaage.

One thing that really blew me away when I was in Japan was the Japanese fried chicken, Karaage. Not just how good it tasted, but how easy it was to get your hands on.

You’d find it everywhere. Little shops, convenience stores, restaurants, and it was always on point. Crispy, full of flavour and just ridiculously easy to grab and eat.

So when we started putting the menu together, I knew I wanted to do our own version.

We marinate our chicken in soy, garlic & ginger, coat it in potato starch and fry it until properly crispy. Then you can finish it off with whichever of our homemade sauces you fancy.
