Classic English dishes with a French touch and traditional Sunday lunches. The Highlander is a landmark pub in this historic town. A proper, old English Free House with all the informal, rustic charm of its 300 year history revealed by the recent restoration. It’s warm and cosy in the winter, with a comforting, open log fire. In the summer, there’s a secluded beer garden and patio. And, of course, there’s a well-chosen selection of wines and beers - including locally brewed cask ales.

A summer afternoon of live music at The Highlander.

Join us as we celebrate 18 years of live music at one of Hitchin’s best-loved pubs with an afternoon of great music, good company and a soundtrack from the legendary Sten King.

Close To The Bone brings together five exceptional musicians with local roots:

Dave Keech – trombone
Isaac Keech – piano
Joe Keech – drums
Colin Watling – saxophone
Rob Rickenberg – bass

Expect two relaxed sets of world-class musicianship, groove, improvisation and musical conversation from a band featuring father and sons playing together alongside long-standing friends and collaborators.

Before and after the band, Sten King will be spinning records to keep the garden moving all day.

Whether you’re a jazz fan, a music lover, or simply looking for the perfect way to spend a summer afternoon, grab a drink, find a spot in the garden and join us.
