💥💥First Review 💥💥
Provenance Butchers and Tearoom - Westhoughton
Score - 8/10
Price - ££
Value for money - 9/10 (takeaway) 7/10 (Eat in)
Pros: wide range of options, fresh high-quality ingredients, value for money, beer (eat in only), good portions, freshly baked bread.
Cons: longer than normal wait during busy hours, big difference in price when eating in, beer had run out 🤣
Star of the Show - the bread 😍
What to order - the Club Sandwich
This is somewhere I used to visit regularly, eating in the café upstairs until it closed. Recently, I noticed that they had reopened upstairs and have massively upgraded their sandwich/takeaway options. They have also installed a new pizza oven that is visible from the front of the shop. I was looking forward to getting back in and seeing what they had on offer; I wasn’t disappointed.
As it was lunch time, I decided to choose a sandwich.
The menu is straight forward and looks quite basic, but this is a case of doing things simply but executing them perfectly.
The star of the show is the bread, ciabatta style; crispy on the outside and almost cake soft on the inside. The ciabatta is served hot and freshly baked in the pizza oven upon ordering (is anyone else doing this? 🤯).
We ordered the Deli and the Ham & Cheese. Both were delicious and more than ample in size. The Ham & Cheese was served with fresh mozzarella rather than a classic sliced cheddar, which really sets it apart. The ham was of high quality, as you would expect with the other half of Provenance being a high-end butcher. My friend had the Deli and was equally impressed. I popped in for a takeaway a few days prior to this review and ordered The Club. It was a level above, up there with the best I have ever had; thick cut chicken breast (definitely not from a packet), top quality bacon (served crispy), and the perfect amount of salad and dressing.
A few things to note… the takeaway menu (pictured) is cheaper than the eat in menu. When eating in you get a side salad and crisps for which you are paying a £3 premium. Personally, I think the takeaway option is much better value for money, however, you don’t get to sample a beer whilst enjoying it, but I suppose there’s got to be a trade-off somewhere. Another “trade-off” to bear in mind is that, given that everything is fresh and made to order, there is also a longer wait time than you would expect in a standard sandwich shop. I’d suggest ringing ahead if you’re on the clock.
They also have pizzas on the menu, both takeaway and eat in, again the pizzas look very good value for money.
All in all, I would highly recommend getting out and giving Provenance a go. For my first review, I was keen to try an establishment that follows the ethos of Northeats; going the extra mile to provide a top-quality product, from sandwiches right through to top end meals – and Provenance certainly delivered on this.
They aren’t massive on the socials so give this a share people.
