πŸ“– Why is Bellingham here?
There’s an interesting story…
When humans first settled this area, they followed the river valleys. Settlements had to be just the right size: not too large to risk starvation, and not too small to risk in-breeding. A community with a radius of about three miles was considered ideal, as everything they needed β€” fruit, berries, bark, grazing land for livestock β€” came from their surroundings.
So when it was time to form a new settlement, they would simply move about six miles along the valley.
Hexham ➑ Humshaugh (6 miles)

Humshaugh ➑ Wark (6 miles)

Wark ➑ Bellingham (6 miles)

Bellingham ➑ Falstone (6 miles)
And that’s why Bellingham is where it is… or so the story goes!

Directions to Hareshaw Linn - From β€˜Tea on the Train’ turn left downhill then right at the petrol station and follow Hareshaw Burn up stream. Follow the path with the The First & Last Brewery, Northumberland on your right, and go through the gate onto the stony path and continue uphill until you come to another gate. Go through the gate and look down to what remains of the Lower Dam.

Continue along the relatively flat path until you come to a picnic area/open space where you can look down to a pretty waterfall with steps down to the burn. Head for the stone stepped path and the sign β€œWaterfall 1 Mile”. You are now on the true path up to the Linn. Look for old drift mine workings hidden in the vegetation along the gorge.

Pass under an arched, moss covered tree on your path and eventually to a flight of stone steps up to a curved seat and then downwards to the first of the six bridges

There is another bench further along at romantically called β€˜Cupid’s Bower’, against a mossy tree with a splendid view of a waterfall.

There are several cascades along your path and plenty of scope for photographers and artists.

Further along there is a huge, tree covered mound, where the banks on the far side of the gorge seem to wrap round in a circle ahead of you. This is close to where the Victorians planted Douglas firs and a favourite place for picnics, making use of the natural acoustics for music and storytelling. At that time the Linn had become a popular place with visitors coming to view the waterfall as well as removing ferns and plants to add to their fashionable collection. Today there are some 300 species of mosses, liverworts and lichens and a variety of trees. The sides of the gorge rise to 70 feet or more..

You will encounter some rocky steps further along.

There is a wooden walkway and a chance to sit and take in the view before you cross the final bridge. Look for the Money Tree where, over time, visitors have hammered coins into the fallen tree for luck rather than offer them to the spirits in the, sometimes, turbulent water. Care should be taken as the final path can be damp and steep. The high rocky cliffs overhang the final seat before you clamber down the last few yards to the dark, peat coloured pool filled by the water tumbling from 30 feet above.

Then why not pop into the The Heritage Centre at Bellingham
