Paulaner Weiss 0.0 — the non-alc wheat beer that forgot the banana and clove.

All I got was crusty brown bread and a whiff of disappointment.

Was hoping for weissbier, got half-baked toast water.

Still, it’s cold and it’s 0.0%. You be the judge.

I expected Kölsch to taste like a standard lager… I was completely wrong 🍺🇩🇪

Smooth, floral, lightly hoppy and ridiculously drinkable.

In Cologne they serve it fresh, cold and fast — often from large casks behind the bar — and honestly, the more German beer culture I experience, the more similarities I see with proper British pub culture.

Simple beer.
Served properly.
In pubs built around conversation and atmosphere.

In this video I talk through:
• what actually makes Kölsch different
• why Cologne serves it the way it does
• how it compares to British cask ale
• and why I think it’s one of the world’s most underrated beer styles

We don’t currently have Früh in stock at the Old Cross, but we do still proudly serve both Gaffel and Reissdorf Kölsch 🍻

Our German beer lineup just keeps getting better 🍺🇩🇪

We’ve got Tegernseer Helles pouring, a stand-alone Paulaner tap, and a fridge full of proper German bottles including Augustiner, Gaffel Kölsch, Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen, Weltenburger Dunkel, Tegernseer, Paulaner and more.

Whether you’re into crisp Helles, smoky Bamberg Märzen, dark Dunkel, wheat beer, Kölsch or strong German classics, there’s plenty to explore at The Old Cross.

A proper taste of Germany, without leaving Hertford.

“Ale and pretzel pieces.
Like a handshake between salty and smooth.”
Fancy snacks? Not here. Just proper beer, the crunch of a pub classic, and a corner with your name on it.

Swing by. No booking needed — just bring your thirst.

A proper pint never goes out of fashion.

🍺 **Paulaner Salvator — not your first pint of the day.**

This is a proper German **Doppelbock**: strong, rich, malty, warming, and very much a beer to take your time over.

It’s the sort of beer you have towards the end of the evening. A nightcap beer. A “one for the road” beer. The kind of beer where whatever you drink afterwards feels slightly pointless.

We stock this at The Old Cross Tavern as part of our German beer range, alongside styles like Helles, Pilsner, Dunkel, Rauchbier, Bock and more.

So if you fancy exploring proper German beer without leaving Hertford, you know where we are.

Cheers,
James

💡 Behind the Bar: What Actually Happens in a Pub Cellar

Most people never see it, but the cellar’s where the magic happens.
It’s not just storage — it’s where the beer finishes its journey.

At the Old Cross Tavern, every cask is vented, conditioned, and tasted before it earns a spot on the bar.
Clean lines, perfect temperature, and a bit of patience — that’s the secret behind a proper pint.

🍺Orval — wild fermented, big foamed, and full of flavour.

Somewhere between a saison and a sour.
Proper hazy. Proper punchy.

Trappist beer doesn’t get much more unique than this.

On the bar now — come try it and let me know your favourite Trappist pick.

"Cask ale is alive… literally.
It’s not just a phrase – it’s a fact. Our real ales are still fermenting in the cask, breathing life right up to the moment they’re poured. No gas. No gimmicks. Just proper, living beer – the way it’s always been.

Pop in, grab a pint, and taste the tradition.
Frankenstein approves. 🧟‍♂️🍺
