"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. 🎀

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. 💗

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

💗 This year, Sam took on running, cycling and swimming challenges to help raise awareness for CoppaFeel!

After being diagnosed with cancer at 19 and later undergoing a double mastectomy, Sam chose to celebrate her body and encourage others to know their normal.

We're honoured that Sam shared her story as part of Tickled Pink.💕

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

We've been named store of the week by trade magazine The Grocer, whose secret shopper praised our store as being "well maintained, with colleagues happy to help at a moment’s notice".

Store manager Craig said: "It’s a great achievement for the store and the team here. Very well deserved. I’m very proud of the team. We scored very highly on the friendliness of colleagues and the cleanliness of the store which I’m really happy with. We have a lot of regular customers here who know the colleagues; it’s very community based and a great place to work. I’m so proud of everyone.”

Well done Lou. We're all so proud of you. 💚

Well done Lou. We're all so proud of you. 💚

When Lou from our Hereford store spotted one of her regular elderly customers was a bit off colour she stepped in to help him finish his shopping and then walked him safely home.

The gentleman, who's in his 80s, was shopping on his own when he started to feel a little bit unwell and needed a sit down. Lou asked him if he was okay and then helped him get his remaining groceries, took him to a till and bagged up all his items. Then, after getting the okay from her team leader, she accompanied him home, which is about ten minutes away.

She said: "We always have a nice little chat when he comes in, he's a lovely gentleman. He just wasn't feeling too clever and I didn't want him to walk home on his own. We had a lovely chat on the way about his life; it was lovely. We took a little trolley with us and when we got to his house I took his shopping inside for him. I just wanted to help him, bless him, and he was very grateful. I love my job as I meet lots of lovely people, and it's nice to be nice and help people."

We are thrilled to share that Bishop Meadows Community Sports Park CIC has been awarded £500 from the Asda Foundation Young Futures Fund – Active Young Lives!

This funding will purchase portable basketball posts and court markings to create a free holiday play space right here in Hereford.

That means more opportunities for our primary-aged children to get active, learn teamwork, build confidence, and have fun together during the school holidays.

A huge thank you to the Asda Foundation for investing in young futures and helping us keep children moving, playing, and smiling.

A huge thank you to our amazing community! This week we were joined in store by the wonderful Jane, fundraiser for Hereford Hospital's children’s ward.

Thanks to our customers’ generosity, they donated £612 worth of children’s pyjamas.

For little ones in hospital, a fresh pair of PJs can bring so much comfort and a sense of home during a scary time. Your kindness helps make their stay a little brighter and cosier.

From all of us at Asda and the children’s ward team – thank you for helping us spread love and care when it’s needed most.
