We are both delighted that The Wee Kelpie has been recognised and awarded a Plastic Free Champion Award from Surfers Against Sewage.
Since opening over 10 years ago, we have used biodegradable packaging, plant based vegware tubs and wooden forks, our bags are tree saver bags, made from recycled paper.
The Wee Kelpie have worked hard towards their Surfers Against Sewage Plastic Free Champion award. They are a traditional Fish and Chip shop who have won many awards and take great pride in our customer service and incredible food on offer.
Just read below to see how they obtained this status ⬇️
• Set up with high ethical standards and commitment to quality produce and service.
• Fitted out to reduce carbon footprint including the choice of paint, furnished with small waiting bar and stools from industrial reclamation.
• Sourcing sustainable products is an important part of their ethos. The Haddock and Cod are MSC frozen at sea, which ensures the most sustainable fresh fish possible. Other fresh fish on offer are landed in Shetland or Peterhead and brought in by the local fishermen daily.
• The Haggis and Black Pudding is made especially for The Wee Kelpie by their local village butcher and the sausage is supplied by Walkers in Kilcreggan, a multi award winning local butcher.
• The potatoes come from a supplier at the Glasgow Fruit Market and they use the best variety available each season. The majority comes from Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire.
• All packaging is biodegradable and they use plant based compostable forks and tubs. The frying range is a three phase filter system ‘ultimate’ efficiency which has lower gas consumption and was designed and built in Scotland by Scotrange and the used fat is sold back to the supplier and recycled into biofuel.
• They are a family run business.
•They cut waste and recycle wherever possible.
