Sometimes the loveliest reviews arrive on the hardest of days. ❤️

Yesterday was one of the busiest and most emotional Saturdays we can remember, plus boiling heat, our regulars, the football, families, cycling groups and a very special but sad gathering taking place at the café for Karen.

In the middle of it all, this wonderful couple arrived, having travelled a long way to come to us and they were an absolute joy. I thought they were so lovely and accepting of everything happening that I deliberately took their photograph and this morning, they left us this review (this is their version of the picture I took) It genuinely means the world to us, especially after such an extraordinary and emotional day. Last Wednesday evening, Karen Saunders enjoyed a lovely meal here at The Hub & Spoke before her planned trip to Cornwall with Mark. None of us could possibly have imagined that, just a few days later, we would be saying goodbye.

Today, at 17.48pm following a cardiac arrest and devastating brain damage, Karen’s life support was withdrawn. Through organ donation, she has helped three other people.

Karen was very fond of the café, and we were extremely fond of her, Mark, and the dogs. The family and friends chose to spend this incredibly difficult moment here, in a place that meant so much to her, with her photograph, flowers and a cup of tea waiting for her.

We feel deeply honoured that they chose to be with us.

Our thoughts and love are with Mark, Karen’s family and everyone who knew and loved her. We still haven’t really taken it in.

Rest peacefully, Karen. You will be very much missed. Message from Mark ..rest in peace my darling.❤️

New in the cake cabinet… and they’re every bit as good as they look.

Our new Churro Doughnuts are soft, fluffy, plant-based doughnuts filled with a rich molten chocolate centre, then rolled in cinnamon sugar for that irresistible churro flavour.

Perfect with a latte, cappuccino or even a chai if you’re feeling indulgent.

Available from today… but we don’t think they’ll hang around for long! 🤎☕

I was in the café today chatting away to customers and Rob about a hundred different important things when I suddenly realised…

The group I was standing with didn’t speak English. They spoke bicycles. 🚴😂

It wasn’t just Rob.

We have customers who speak English, French, Spanish and all sorts of other languages. But cyclists? They have a language all of their own.

Suddenly it’s all cadence, watts, chainrings, gear ratios, tubeless tyres, drafting, headwinds, tailwinds and who knows what else. They all understand each other perfectly, while I’m just standing here wondering if I’ve accidentally wandered into a foreign country.

I don’t think I’ll ever become fluent in Bicycle… and to be honest, I’m not sure I want to!

But after all these years at The Hub & Spoke, I’ve learned one very important phrase…

It usually ends with, “Tea, espresso coffee and a slice of cake or protein bar please.” ☕🍰❤️

Now that is a language I understand.

Locally baked baguettes, pasties, sausage rolls, cakes, smoothies, soup, shakes coffee & pizzas. GF/Vegan too

You ask:
“What time will you be home?”

They reply:
“Depends on the wind.”

You ask:
“Can you pick up some milk?”

They reply:
“I’ve entered another sportive.”

At some point you realise…

They don’t speak English. They speak bicycles. 🚴☕

The future looks bright… ✨

Yesterday we had the pleasure of welcoming 13-year-old Janina to The Hub & Spoke Café as part of her school’s Work Explore Day.

What a wonderful young lady she is.

She worked hard from the moment she arrived, happily took on every task, asked lots of questions and embraced everything from food preparation to making her very own pizza to take home at the end of the day. 🍕

It was a crazy busy day and the whole team commented on how well she did, and we believe she has a very bright future ahead of her.

A huge thank you to all of our lovely customers, who made her feel so welcome and encouraged her throughout the day. Your kindness helped make her first taste of the workplace such a positive experience.

We hope you enjoyed your day with us, Janina. Thank you for all your hard work, when you reach 16 you’ll be welcome back at The Hub & Spoke. ❤️. (We do of course have permission to post)
