This is the welcome currently greeting people at the top of Horsfall Street.
The amount of fly-tipped waste beside the commercial bins has grown into a substantial dump: furniture, doors, timber, cardboard, black bags and loose household rubbish.
It is unsightly, potentially hazardous and extremely off-putting to customers visiting the area.
To avoid any misunderstanding, the red bins shown are legitimate commercial-waste bins. At the Big Six, we pay council tax, business rates and also pay separately for the proper collection of our commercial waste. Like responsible residents and businesses throughout Halifax, we do what is required of us.
It is therefore incredibly frustrating to see other people treat the top of our street as a free dumping ground.
We have now formally reported this to Calderdale Council under reference #260821-000015 and have contacted our ward councillors Cathy Featherstone, Anne Kingstone and Dave Mendes da Costa. We are asking not only for the waste to be removed, but for action to prevent the same thing happening again.
Yesterday's national news talked about illegal dumps being allowed to blight communities and destroy confidence that anything will be done.
This may be smaller in scale, but the principle is exactly the same: once an area is allowed to look like a dump, more dumping follows.
We aren’t looking to start an argument or blame anyone without evidence. We simply want Horsfall Street cleaned up and kept clean—for residents, customers and a business that pays to dispose of its waste properly.
