Pete’s been cooking up a seriously good drinks menu 🍸 And yes, it’s actually been out for a little while, so if you haven’t tried it yet, consider this your sign to book a table.

And for the non drinkers, we’ve got a full proper mocktail menu too. Not an apple juice with a sad slice of lemon pretending to be a cocktail. Proper drinks, made properly. Alcoholic or not.

WTF is The Yan?

Apparently, we had a few thoughts.

A chain hotel? Absolutely not.
Fast food? Talk to our slow cooked Hogget.
Food waste? We’d rather not.
A battery hen? Never seen one.
Not having a pud? Now you’re just being ridiculous.

Just a little independent place in Grasmere doing things our own way, with a brilliant team, proper food and plenty of personality.

Our Gee, taking to the stage at Westmorland County Show and looking very much at home there.

Joining Cumbria Life in the Food Theatre, Gee talked all things lamb, local farming, seasonality and sustainability.

The conversation went far beyond the prime cuts. Gee shared how we make use of the so called lesser cuts, elevating them with good cooking, time and technique and giving great local produce the attention it deserves.

She also spoke about seasonality, thoughtful menu planning and one of the less glamorous but very useful tools in a sustainable kitchen: the freezer. Freezing isn’t a dirty word. Used well, it allows us to preserve produce when it’s at its best, make the most of the seasons and importantly, reduce waste.

All things we practise every day at The Yan, rather than simply talk about.

And Gee? Calm, knowledgeable and completely natural, with the audience hanging on every word. We couldn’t have been prouder.

Thank you to Cumbria Life and Westmorland County Show for inviting us along. It was a real pleasure to be part of it.

Nice work, Gee. We think the stage rather suits you.

The best hotel and bistro in the Lake District? We think so… although we may be slightly biased considering we’ve hired half the family. 😂

The Westmorland County Show is back tomorrow and Thursday 🐑🌾

Two days of prize livestock, show jumping, working dogs, local food, rural crafts, live entertainment and all the glorious Cumbrian chaos that comes with it. A proper day out, basically.

And this year, we’ve got an extra reason to be excited…

Our very own Gee has been chosen to represent The Yan in the Food Theatre, cooking live at 1pm on Thursday 10 September 👩‍🍳

We’re incredibly proud of her, and we’d love to see some familiar faces in the crowd. Come along, say hello and give Gee a proper cheer while she flies the flag for our little corner of the Lakes.
