์ƒˆํ•ด ๋ณต ๋งŽ์ด ๋ฐ›์œผ์„ธ์š”! Happy New Year to all our loyal followers and customers!๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿพ๐ŸŽŠ๐ŸŽ‰
Korean foods are well-known to be spicy, zetsy and intense. After all the amazing feast at New Year gatherings, they need something to wash down all the strong flavours! Today we are going to introduce 2 drinks that Koreans enjoy accompanying their meals.
Sikhye ์‹ํ˜œ, or sweet rich punch, is one of the most popular Korean drinks. Its moderately sweet flavour and unique subtle malty aftertaste. It is made of fermented malt and rice. As the rice ferments, the grains turn white and spongy, releasing starch which turns the liquid light amber. The punch is never fermented long enough to become alcoholic, making it suitable for both children and adults. It is typically served as a dessert drinks as it is known to aid digestion.
Makgeolli ๋ง‰๊ฑธ๋ฆฌ, aka rice wine, is a milky, off-white, slightly fizzy alcoholic beverage. It has a very interesting taste, being slightly viscous, sweet, tangy, bitter, yet also astringent. It is said that its fizzy nature and flavour serves as a great palate cleanser after a big feast or while snacking on heavy fried food. Unlike Soju which is poured into small shot glasses, makgeolli is usually served chilled with a ladle to pour them into shallow bowls. If you are a first timer to the drink, we would recommend you to try out the flavoured version as the original one can taste quite pungent. Our restaurant has a wide range of fruity makgeolli, which includes strawberry, green grape, plum, grapefruit and the new addition peach. Please drink responsibly though!
This comes to the end of our mini episodes of Korean New Year food and beverage. We all hereby wish everyone a wonderful smooth fruitful year!

1 more day to ์„ค๋‚ !
Many traditional dishes Koreans prepared for New Year are made for family celebrations. Not only do the dishes carry a lot of beautiful symbolism and wishes for a brand New Year, they usually require a lot of group work, hence perfect for family activities and bonding.
The first dish we would like to share today is yet another very common dish to be present on festive days called ์žก์ฑ„ Japchae. It is a very colourful stir-fried Koresan sweet potato noodles dish made with an abundance of assorted vegetables like carrot, onions, spring onions and mushrooms, as well as marinated beef strips and sesame dressing. Eating this dish symbolises longevity, but you are also eating all the colours of the rainbow in the dish!
The second dish ๋ถˆ๊ณ ๊ธฐBulgogi is one of the most popular meat dishes at our restaurant. It is marinated thinly sliced beef, typically cooked over an open flame. It literally means โ€œfire meatโ€ in Korean. The beef takes in the subtle flavours of soy sauce, garlic, green onion and a bit of sugar. Bulgogi is traditionally eaten with rice, but it is also great to be eaten in a taco way - dipping it in soybean paste sauce and having it wrapped in a piece of lettuce, yummy!
Tomorrow will be the first day of Lunar New Year, and we will introduce drinks that Koreans usually have at festive occasions!

Do you know New Year is just around the corner?
Wait what? I thought New Year just passed? No, we are talking about the Lunar New Year!
Seollal (์„ค๋‚ ) is one of the most important traditional Korean holidays in Korean culture. It is marked by the gathering of family members, performing Korean rituals and enjoying traditional foods. Unlike New Year, Seollal does not fall on the same day every year. In 2024, it happens on 10th February, which is literally 3 days later! This year, Silla Korean Restaurant would like to take the chance in the following days and introduce a few signature New Year food that are also served at our restaurant!
Jeon
Jeon is a savory pancake-like dish made by coating the ingredients of choice with a light flour batter then frying in pan of oil. The ingredients used will completely change the taste. A variety of Jeon can be seen during Koreaโ€™s holiday seasons, but it is almost guaranteed to see kimchi jeon and haemuel jeon (seafood pancake). In addition to these, buchu jeon (chives pancake) and pa jeon (spring onion pancake) are also available at our restaurant!
Mandu
Mandu, aka dumplings, was used as a symbol representing the wish for a peaceful new year during memorial services. Our restaurant provides the option of vegetables and pork mandu. While pork mandu is a popular choice, we strongly recommend our vegetables one, with not only the common fillings like veggies, tofu and egg, but also the uncommon sweet potato glass noodles, which definitely adds interesting texture and flavour to the dish.
Stay tuned and more New Year food will be introduced tomorrow!
