A big thank-you to a wonderful gentleman ❤️
A beautiful thing happened at La Gondola last night, and we wanted to share it with you….
We had a lovely gentleman dining with us who, during his meal, noticed a family of seven sitting nearby.
Three generations of one family — grandparents, mum and dad, and three children — all enjoying a special evening together.
At the end of his meal, completely unexpectedly, he quietly told us that he would like to pay their bill.🧾
His reason?
He said that watching them laughing, smiling, having fun and simply enjoying being together — creating memories as a family — had genuinely touched his heart. ❤️
He asked to remain completely anonymous and simply asked that, once he had left the restaurant, we let the family know when they asked for the bill 🧾
And so we did.
What happened next was incredibly moving.
There were tears, smiles, disbelief, gratitude — and a beautiful reminder of just how much a simple act of kindness can mean.
It touched the family, our staff, and everyone else sitting in the restaurant that evening.
To the gentleman who did this: thank you. ❤️
We don’t know your story, and we don’t need to. You asked to remain anonymous, and we respect that. We simply wanted you to know that your kindness didn’t just pay for a meal.
You gave a family a memory they will talk about for years to come.
And there is a lovely little twist to this story…
Apparently, ChatGPT recommended La Gondola to you as the place to go in Filey! 😄
So, to everyone who has ever left us a review, recommended us to a friend, told someone about us, shared one of our posts or simply supported our little restaurant — thank you.
You have all played a part in bringing this moment to life, and we are truly, truly grateful. ❤️
And this isn’t even the first time we’ve witnessed something like this at La Gondola.
Some time ago, a wonderful local gentleman paid it forward for a young couple with a baby. He told us that he remembered how difficult those early days of starting a family could be, and he simply wanted to give them a little help.
They were incredibly touched. They told us that, after recently having an experience where they had felt judged as parents, his kindness had restored their faith in people.
The following day, the young dad walked miles through the pouring rain to bring a thank-you card into the restaurant for the gentleman, which we passed on to him.
Two completely different stories, but the same beautiful message:
Kindness matters.
You never really know what someone else might be going through, or how much one small act of kindness might mean to them.
So here’s to the people who quietly make the world a little kinder.
No recognition.
No expectation.
Just kindness. ❤️
And perhaps, if we’re lucky, it inspires someone else to do the same.
Thank you, wonderful stranger.
Your kindness will stay with us forever ❤️
