It has taken months of hard graft from Ryan of The Human Collective to get me on his page, he can have a well deserved rest now 😅
Open today 9:30am - 4:00pm
"My name is Lauren and I own Honeycups Coffee on Hunter Street in Kirkcaldy.
I've been here almost a year now, I got the keys on July 1st and opened on August 25th. This is my second coffee shop. Although funnily enough, I had never even worked in a coffee shop before owning one myself.
I was always looking for a new place when I was in my first shop. It just never felt right to me, I wanted to be in Kirkcaldy because it's where I've called home for a long time. I've lived in a few different places over the UK but this is where I've lived the longest. I went to high school here and have brought my children up here.
I am a massive overthinker. Even over the smallest of things and after finding out online that this shop was up for rent, I found myself driving home past it... just for a nosey. I would park up outside and ask myself "can I do it?". This lasted a good couple of weeks at least. I'm very lucky to have a great support network of friends and family behind me, pushing me on. And even asked my most important regulars Sheena and Roy, if they would be able to make it to the new place. If they had said no I probably wouldn't have gone for it.
I do love Kirkcaldy, It feels like i'm starting to build a wee community here. The book club that I started recently has been a great success so far.. we're now on to our second month and it's been great collaborating and working with Lou. A mutual friend linked us up as she was looking to sell her "blind dates with books" and now she's became someone who I adore. We started it on a whim not really thinking many would show and have just kinda went with it, I'm not really a reader. I love the thought of it but I've always struggled with reading because my brain is so busy all the time. I'd look at the words halfway down a page and realise I've not taken anything in. Having the book club has really given me a reason to take some time to sit and relax and really try to focus on the book. Knowing at the end of it I can reward myself with time spent dinking coffee and eating cake whilst chatting about the goings on with a wonderful group of women.
We had to open two different time slots, its coffee and brunch in the morning and then coffee and cakes in the afternoon and it's been really great, especially meeting new people. That's what I love most about what I do, it's the people who make it. We've even had to discuss maybe starting a third group as we currently have a waiting list for spaces. And I really do understand why, because I think people just want to be a part of something. Whether it's books, crafting, running or wild swimming, people want to be part of a community and it's nice being with others, enjoying something together.
The shop is getting busy now and it's happening organically too through word of mouth which I am so thankful for. I've definitely been holding back a little though, as I am just here myself. Sometimes it means the waiting times can be a little longer but nobody seems to mind too much. I'm at the stage now where I'm starting to need a little more help, but at the moment I'm very lucky that I have friends that will come along for coffee and quite happily jump on cleaning the dishes.
These fancy drinks that I've been making have been a hit. I have been making some syrups myself for a while now but recently put a photo up about a banana espresso, or as i call it, The shaken banana and now people can't seem to get enough of it.
As a mum of three young children, I know how daunting it can be sometimes trying to get a coffee somewhere, which is why I have a dedicated play area for them to enjoy. If I can help give parents five minutes of peace with even a sip of a hot drink then I will always be happy to entertain and play. It takes a village and all that.
Everyone gets welcomed into the shop as if I have known them for years. If you stay for long enough you may even get your own dedicated mug. I've had a few comments now that coming into the shop is like going to a friend's living room to catch up and I couldn't think of a better compliment to receive.
Have you been in the shop? You can support Lauren by giving her story a wee share. Thank you ❤️
