Long before coffee was being poured in The Dovetail Café, this building was home to Whiteways Cider.

These wonderful old photographs hanging in the Apple Pit, give us a glimpse into life at the Whiteways Hele depot more than 70 years ago.

The 2nd photograph is particularly special to us. Taken around 1951, it shows apples arriving at the old Apple Pit, ready for milling and pressing. During the season, an incredible 50 tons of apples could be pressed here in a single day. That very Apple Pit is our undercover outside seating area at The Dovetail Café!

We’ve also got an impressive line up of Whiteways delivery lorries (photographed in 1958) outside the buildings that are now home to The Antique Village

If anyone remembers the Whiteways days, worked here, or has old photographs or stories of the Hele factory, we would absolutely love to hear them.

Please give a very warm welcome to Lily, our newest member of The Dovetail Café team!

Today we caught up with her serving the lovely Penny, one of our regular customers :)

Over the next few weeks, Lily will be learning the ropes with our manager… who is also called Lily. 😆 We can already see this getting confusing!

If you haven’t been to The Dovetail Café yet, you’re in for a treat!

Step inside, through the revolving doors to find a warm, welcoming café with George, Lily and the team busy behind the counter.

In this decadent space of mirrors and chandeliers in rich reds and golds, we’ve tables for two, larger tables for big groups and comfy sofas to linger a little longer.

If you prefer to sit outside, head to The Apple Pit. A cool covered spot with a goldfish pond and gentle running water. Did you know, this was once the Old Whiteways Cider Factory where apples were tipped right into this space!

Sun worshipers, The courtyard has even more seating to choose from.

If you’re looking for a place to catch up with friends and family for a coffee and cake or a light lunch, we look forward to seeing you. We’re dog friendly, have plenty of parking and serve the best coffee!
