And the experiment is over!

Thanks to everyone who came to dine with us, we truly had a great time and it made all the hard work and tiredness not be too cumbersome (having said that, we will welcome some downtime too!).

Plenty learnings and as much as we’ve been told we’re a double act 🥸, we feel everyone enjoyed it as much as we did, and the compliments kept on coming 💙💙

We had a significant local support and we are so humbled by it. We also had walk ins and others booking because they heard about it either by being at the cafe during the day or word of mouth, which is most certainly the most powerful form of marketing! We even had a group of lovely Skye trailers who, having been at the cafe earlier in the trail, they then took 3 buses from the north end of the island just to dine with us before they headed off back home! 🥹. A few people traveled from far and some from a few minutes away and we appreciate every single one!

Anyway (rambling on? Yo?), by popular request, we will run a few nights over the winter. We will announce the dates later on. It will be booking only and limited availability.

Thanks again, from the bottom of our hearts, for helping making this little trial a success!

Adiós amigos!
Matthew & Rosario

PS, I should add that I would never do anything like this without my beloved hubby, Mateo! Front of house extraordinaire, prepping master, time keeping expert and packer and unpacker specialist. We had to do a lot of the prep at home (if you’ve been to the cafe you will know the kitchen constraints!) and if it wasn’t for his countless lists and stock checks this would have probably been a very different outcome! Haha! 💙

Week 3 done, 1 to go…

It’s the final countdown (tududutu tududututu, tududutu, tududutututu… admit it.. you sang along…!)

This week has been a mix of being incredibly tired and incredibly proud and equally overwhelmed (and constantly catching up with ice cream making!)

A couple of full house nights and some intimate dinners. Mostly locals and a few walk ins too!

We think we have already made our minds up about winter and next year… watch this space.. will we? Will we not? Let’s get through this week and then we talk about what the future may or may not bring 😬

Still a few spaces available this week, and it’s the last chance, so if you want to dine with us, better get in touch!

Open Monday to Saturday 8am to 6pm for the cafe (take away only from 5) and open the same days from 6:30pm to 9pm for after hours 9 course tasting menu. Saturday 5th September is the last day of the Cafe Elgol After Hours!

Much love,
Matthew & Rosario

PS, you really didn’t think it would be a short post, did you? 😇

PPS, still not taking photos… but here’s a photo of the sticky pork as it’s Matthew’s favourite so an old photo but still valid! Ha!

Week two, what a hoot!!

Ok, short and to the point (maybe… 😇)

I cannot believe we’re half way through our little “experiment”!!

The feedback so far has been overwhelmingly fantastic and we couldn’t be more thankful to everyone who joined us for dinner and even gave us extra of their time by providing us with feedback and words of encouragement to bring these nights again next year (and through the winter!).

Tired? Yes, regrets? Definitely no!

Last night was a full house with 9 people dining with us and we loved every minute of it! We also felt really bad and sorry for having to turn a few people away! But we’re not about crunching numbers but rather creating an experience!

Only two weeks left, so if you’re thinking of booking, get in touch! Saturday 5th of September is the last night we will be open for “Cafe Elgol After Hours”

Ok… maybe failed at being short and to the point, but can you see how passionate we are about what we do? 💙

PS, still rubbish at taking photos of the food… 🥺

Plenty coffee, teas, hot chocolates, cold drinks including b**r, w**e and c***r!

First week reflections…

So week one of Cafe Elgol After Hours is now done and dusted! A rollercoaster but such a high! The feedback has been great, the bookings are increasing and we even had some walk ins! It was not mega busy and we think that for the first week that has suited us well as we were adapting and reassessing our approach on a daily basis. We found a good rhythm.

Some key learnings:
- we want people to feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible so we will reduce the capacity to maximum 8 people per night.
- Final sitting will be 19:30, after this time we won’t be able to accommodate people in. This is so the night and service can flow and people can have enough time without having to rush their dinner.
- The importance of doggy bags…! (Or maybe a bit more portion control from us?)
- Stop burning yourself with the oven and don’t use your head to stop things falling on you.
- Don’t worry about potentially missing the solar eclipse everyone kept talking about… as you can see from the photo… the good old clouds of the Misty Isle wouldn’t have let us see it anyway! Although the sky did go darker and the temperature dropped, strange eerie atmosphere but that’s about it!

We look forward to week 2 and to continue with this injection of endorphins (rest is for winter, yeh?)

Please get in touch if you want to book a table, smoke signals won’t do, but pretty much any other way will!

And last but most certainly not least, thank you to our amazing staff who have kept the cogs turning and the cafe going during the day to allow us time to do prepping and being primed for the evenings! These evenings could not happen without them!

Now for a Sunday of just chilling, together!

All the best!
Matthew & Rosario

Thanks to all our guests who joined us yesterday for our opening night! We had a blast and the feedback has been really good too, which is music to our ears and we feel empowered to keep going with these “AFTER HOURS” evenings at the cafe.

As we shared before, we only do set menus (including a vegetarian menu), which include 9 dishes, sides, dips and bread with the options to add some yummy extras too, like Elgol sustainably caught lobster and a cheese plate to finish off the evening.

We did manage to get some piccies, so you can see some of the things you can expect. We aim to make small amendments to the menus regularly, to keep things interesting too.

We only have space for 10 people inside, and this is for the set menus only. As we don’t want to rush anyone and we want everyone to have a relaxed evening, we will only do 10 covers per night so as much as we welcome walk ins, make sure you book ahead to avoid being disappointed! On the same note, the last sitting will be 7:30pm and we won’t be able to accommodate anyone beyond this time.

We would also love it if you could help us spread the word and share this with your friends and family. It would be very highly appreciated.

Before I keep waffling on (who? Me?) thank you again for all the support and words of encouragement so far, we go again!

It’s the evening before this new adventure we decided to embark on, and it’s truly a mix of excitement and what have we done, in equal measures!

We have put so much work, thought and love into the menus and we think we have put together something quite special.

We will be taking photos tomorrow (note to self!), so we will be able to share these probably on Tuesday together with the menu. We want to keep it a little quiet for opening night and as a little surprise for those who will be dining with us! Although we can share with you that the menus consist of 9 sharing dishes with 3 sides, bread and dips with some additional extras should you want them.

Practicalities reminder: in order to allow for the switchover to run smoothly, the cafe will continue to be open Monday to Saturday 8am to 6pm however the kitchen will be closed at 5pm and until 6 pm it will be take away only.

The evening starts at 6:30pm until 9pm. We only have space for 10 people and we want everyone to feel relaxed and comfortable and therefore we will only take 10 people on any one night, therefore booking is highly recommended however, availability permitting, we will also take walk ins.

If the weather is on our side, the area outside of the cafe will be open for drinks only.

I present to you… Gooseberry cake!

When one of your lovely neighbours messages saying “you home? Got some goodies to share” and she then shows up with a ton (and I mean, a ton!) of her homegrown gooseberries and you spend all Sunday making jam and then a lightbulb moment happens and ta-dah! Gooseberry cake for the cafe today!

Also coffee and biscoff (must get myself some more baileys!) and chocolate and vanilla alongside a lot of other home baked goodies as always!

The bounty also had courgettes and cucumbers… watch this space!

Thank you, Aneta Klekocka!!

Happy Monday everyone!!

Well she’s gone and done it again. There are no limits to this girl’s talents!

Earlier this year she started making Wh**ky Tablet, and it is just a big seller as her original, Traditional Tablet!

She has now done what many thought impossible, and I ask you… have you ever even seen VEGAN Tablet? Let alone tasted it?

Well, now you CAN! Katie’s Vegan Tablet (with a hint of coconut) is just every bit as delicious as the other 2!

All Gluten Free as well! If you’ve not yet had any “Katie’s Tablet” get down to before we sell out (again!)
