We are a small, family run cafe in the heart of Canonmills. We have been here for almost 13 years. We work hard. We’ve built a loyal, wonderful customer base and we are a busy little place… but it’s never been tougher to run a business than now.

We got through Covid, through the lockdowns and the energy price hikes, the cost of living increases and the National Insurance increases, but we are on our knees.

The business rates increase is just the nail in the coffin for many and we are not far away.

It’s time the government realise that once small businesses go, only the chains remain.

I’ve written to MP’s. Signed petitions. Spoken to our local councillors. No one seems to care. Please help raise awareness of our plight. Every small business depends on you.

Today's edition of The Scotsman puts a welcome focus on the experience of small businesses across Scotland.

Running a small business right now is particularly tough.

Costs are rising relentlessly. More than a third expect to shrink or close in the coming 12 months in the face of these growing pressures.

We're grateful to The Scotsman for not only shining a light on these pressures but also highlighting potential solutions.

There is an excellent leader column which supports FSB's calls for a continuation of the "lifeline" Small Business Bonus Scheme as well as a review of eligibility thresholds to ensure the scheme continues to fulfil its aim of supporting small businesses.

As the last few minutes of 2025 tick by, I can’t help but think of all the wonderful people who have touched our lives throughout the year.

To say we are grateful is an understatement. Ivan, the kids and I are so thankful to you all for your loyalty, friendship and of course for all the laughs along the way.

We blinked and it’s now only two sleeps until Santa comes down the chimney…!

Every year goes by quicker than the last don’t you think? Not sure how we got here but here we are nonetheless.

For your support, friendship, laughter and love. Ivan and I feel extremely blessed to know many of you so well.

We are witness to so many special moments; birthdays, engagements, family gatherings and so much more. We share in your joy and also in the hard times that life throws at us all. Thank you for allowing us to be part of your lives.
