Coffee machine drama: solved. ☕🚀

After a bit of trouble with our current coffee machine, the absolute legends at Liquid Spirit Coffee Roasters have swooped in and replaced it with this super whizz of a machine.

Honestly, it feels like we’ve gone from “please behave” to “stand back, she’s ready to launch flat whites into orbit.” The new machine is shiny, speedy and already looking very at home behind the counter at First Serve Café.

A massive thank you to Liquid Spirit for all their effort, patience, support and for keeping the coffee flowing when we needed them most. We really do love you all. Your continued support means a huge amount to us and to everyone who relies on their morning coffee, emergency latte, post-tennis cappuccino or “I deserve this” hot drink.

So next time you’re in, come and say hello to the new coffee beast. Same lovely Liquid Spirit coffee, just with a bit more sparkle under the bonnet. ☕✨

So, rather than creating our own mini bark mountain, we’re offering some of it out to anyone who could make use of it.

⚽☕ THE 1AM KICK-OFF SURVIVAL PLAN HAS LANDED! ☕⚽

England at 1am? That is not a normal kick-off time. That is a full-blown operation. A sofa-based mission. A sleep-deprived tactical masterclass.

So here is the First Serve Café game plan:

✅ 3pm: Tactical nap. Not lazy. Elite preparation.
✅ 8pm: Bed early. Pretend you’re sensible.
✅ 12:30am: Up, stretch, hydrate, find the remote.
✅ 1am: Kick-off. Sing loud. Cheer louder. Wake the neighbours responsibly.
✅ 3am: Back to bed. No extra time please. Nobody needs penalties with school in the morning.
✅ 8am: Reality returns. School run. Work. Life. Coffee.

And that is where we come in.

Whether you’ve stayed up for every pass, shouted at the telly, celebrated wildly, or accidentally watched the second half through one eye, First Serve Café will be ready with the recovery kit: proper coffee, breakfast, bakes, and the kind of food that tells your tired soul, “we go again.” 🍳☕🍰

We’re giving one lucky winner the chance to win a Pizza Making Party for up to 10 kids at First Serve Café! 🎉

The kids will get to make, top and create their very own pizzas before sitting down to enjoy their masterpieces. Then, because no party should end without a little sugar sparkle, each child will also get 1 scoop of ice cream with either chocolate or strawberry sauce. 🍦🍓🍫

Expect floury fingers, cheesy smiles and a table full of mini pizza chefs living their best saucy life. 🍅🧀

The prize includes:

🍕 Pizza making for up to 10 children
🥤 Jugs of squash
🍦 1 scoop of ice cream per child with chocolate or strawberry sauce
🎉 A fun party experience at First Serve Café

🇬🇷 Greek BBQ & Tipples at First Serve Café! 🍋🍗

We’re bringing a little taste of the Med to Old Town Rec with an afternoon and evening of Greek-inspired food, tipples, sunshine energy and proper community vibes.

Join us on Saturday 18th July from 1:30pm until 8:00pm for grilled chicken on the BBQ, fresh Greek-style flavours, dips, salads, olives, flatbreads, cold drinks and that relaxed summer feeling where one drink turns into a chat, a chat turns into another plate of food, and suddenly everyone’s saying “Yamas!” like they’ve been doing it for years.

And it’s not just about the food. 🎾🏓
We’ll also have free tennis and pickleball available, so you can grab a racket, have a hit, try something new, bring the kids down, challenge a mate, or just wobble your way through a rally before rewarding yourself with something from the BBQ.

Whether you’re popping down after a walk, meeting friends, bringing the family, or just fancy something a bit different at the Rec, we’d love to see you there.

The Listener vs The Talker, First Serve Café edition ☕🎾

We all know this table.

One iced coffee arrives full of stories, side quests, plot twists, school-run updates, tennis chat, weekend plans, café gossip and at least three separate “you’ll never believe this…” moments.

The other iced coffee simply nods, listens, slowly disappears, and somehow ends up looking like it has carried the emotional weight of the entire conversation. 🫠

At Old Town Rec, every table has its own little drama. Some people come for a peaceful coffee. Some people come for a proper catch-up. Some people come intending to stay 20 minutes and suddenly the ice has melted, the courts have changed groups twice, the dog walkers have done another lap, and your friend is still only halfway through their story.

Whether you are The Listener, The Talker, or the dangerous third option, The One Who Says “I’ll Be Quick” And Absolutely Isn’t, we have the iced coffees ready.

That moment England score the winning goal against DR Congo and First Serve Café turns into Wembley with a coffee machine 😂🏴☕️

One minute it’s a calm evening at the café…

Next minute I’m shouting “YESSSSSSS!” loud enough to wake the cakes up, rattle the teaspoons and make the brioches think they’ve been called up to the England squad.

But here’s the twist…

Was it England scoring the winner?

Or was it me realising the coffee machine was still on and thinking…

“Brilliant. We’re already warmed up and ready for tomorrow morning!” ☕️🔥

Forget tactics. Forget substitutions. Forget VAR.

The board is looking bright, the coffee is looking beautiful, and Old Town Rec is very much in its summer era.

Whether you’re here for a morning latte, a post-park ice cream, a cool drink after tennis, or a little sit-down while the kids burn through their energy reserves like tiny solar panels, we’ve got you covered.

Our summer board is packed with what’s happening at the café, the courts, and around the rec. From Set2Win tennis, adult coaching, kids coaching, cardio tennis, summer activities, and our lovely Chatty Café table, there’s plenty going on for all ages.

And yes, we’re now open until 5pm, so there’s even more time for coffee, cake, cold drinks, ice creams, lunch, park visits, tennis sessions, and those “we’ll just pop in quickly” moments that somehow become an hour in the sunshine.

The sunshine has clearly been whispering to the cake counter, because our Lemon & Blueberry Cake is back for the summer.

Soft, zesty sponge, little blueberry bursts, lemony sweetness and that dreamy icing on top. It’s bright, fresh and exactly the sort of slice that disappears quicker than you planned.
