James Huttons 300th birthday anniversary 🥳🥳

Through our menus, largely locally sourced, and all our tastes and tales, we are always sharing the history and heritage of the Borderlands.

James Hutton lived & farmed in Berwickshire and is someone who contributed so much geologically & agriculturally both local & global 🌍🤩.

Our pork products come from where he farmed at Slighhouses and barley which we feature on our menus too was a crop he experimented extensively with growing & brewing and documented his findings 🌾

Today, we celebrate 300 years since the birth of James Hutton and we are so excited by the launch of the new Deep Time Trail in the South of Scotland.

The trail will take you to Siccar Point where you can see the rocks that changed our understanding of our planet.

Come and visit the birthplace of Geology and explore this beautiful area for yourself.

Along the Berwickshire coast sit four beautifully crafted bronze sculptures that tell the heart breaking story of the 'widows and bairns' left by Scotland's worst fishing disaster.

In 1881, 189 men lost their lives, many within sight of their loved ones on the shore and it's a beautiful memorial that looks out over the seas to remind us of our history.

Delighted to see this trail opening this weekend 🤩🤩. The inspiration, learning & development James Hutton took from Berwickshire are globally renowned 🥰

Siccar Point on the Scottish Borders coast is one of the most significant locations in the history of geology. It was here in 1788 that James Hutton predicted, and then found, an unconformity – a geological feature that represents a significant gap in the geological record, and shows how the Earth’s surface is continually recycled and regenerated by natural processes.

To celebrate the Tercentenary of James Hutton’s birth, the Edinburgh Geological Society and partners are creating a new Deep Time Trail at Siccar Point. The trail will lead visitors along the 1.3 km route from the nearest road to the viewpoint above Siccar Point. Along the way, Hutton’s story gradually unfolds.

Join geologists from the Edinburgh Geological Society at Siccar Point to explore the new Deep Time Trail and find out more about James Hutton and this famous location.

The open day is on a drop in basis, 11am to 4pm each day, and is free.
