We felt it was important to make this statement, both for ourselves and for everyone who has supported us.
We were genuinely surprised, and incredibly grateful, to discover how many nominations The Spanish Nook received for the Dunfermline Business Awards. Being nominated by customers and local people is something we really appreciate.
However, after looking into the awards and the organisation behind them, we have some concerns.
We have contacted the local MSP office, Council officers, a local Councillor, Business Gateway and other local business owners. So far, nobody we have spoken to appears to know anything about these awards or the organisers.
We also became aware of reporting around other hospitality and business awards where concerns were raised about large numbers of businesses being named as finalists and then being encouraged to purchase tickets to attend the ceremony. Trading Standards has previously advised businesses to look into the organisation behind awards, how nominations and judging work, and whether payment is required to receive an award or attend an event.
To be absolutely clear, we are not saying that these awards are a scam, and we are not asking anyone to stop voting for us.
If you would like to vote for The Spanish Nook, you can still do so at dunfermlinebusinessawards.co.uk.
We have been nominated in the following categories:
☕ Cafe of the Year
🍹 Bar of the Year
🛍️ Independent Retailer of the Year
🏆 Business of the Year
🍽️ Restaurant of the Year
🚀 Start Up of the Year
We are very grateful to everyone who took the time to nominate us. That part genuinely means a lot to us.
At the same time, we want to be transparent with our customers and followers about our concerns. If we do reach the final, we will not be purchasing tickets to attend the ceremony.
We thought it was only fair to be open about this rather than quietly carry on without saying anything.
