Brilliant article from University of Dundee about Fred MacAulay and his time in Dundee. What a character and lovely man who thinks and speaks very highly of Dundee.

Before he was making audiences laugh across the UK, Fred MacAulay was a university student grabbing a pint in The Speedwell Bar - aka Mennies - before heading to the students' union.

After completing a Bachelor of Accountancy in 1978, he set out to become a chartered accountant, but realised working with numbers wasn't for him.

So, at around the age of 30, he took a chance on standup comedy… and the rest is history!

Nearly five decades after graduating, we caught up with Fred back at one of his old Dundee haunts to chat about student life, becoming one of Scotland's best-loved comedians, and why his connection to the University goes far beyond his degree.

Thanks to all of our customers and well done to all staff. It’s a real privilege to be included in The Telegraph’s top 500 bars across the country 2026!

It makes us proud to be recognised when the criteria is charming character, welcoming staff, rich history and award-winning beer.

The other thing I would add to that is customers. I’ve visited hundreds if not thousands of pubs/bars over the years and seldom do you find an electric atmosphere like Mennie’s created by people of all ages speaking to each other.

Congratulations and well deserved to everyone at Star & Garter in Dundee who were also included.
