Weve had a busy couple of weeks full of weddings and buffets, but this weekend after all the orders were complete we celebrated 3 of Cream Me Up Scottys biggest supporters!
Starting with cake for an incredible 91st birthday, followed by a fabulous meal for Mum and Dad Scottys wedding anniversary! Thank you to Jack's at Woodlakes for looking after us so well Sunday we can't wait to come back!

Due to the extreme temperatures and the addition of a buffet to our orders for today, we have made the decision not to open, to help keep all preparation areas as cool as possible and to be able to use all cold storage for buffet food.
Sorry for any inconvenience.

And just like that we've reached the end! I hope you've all enjoyed seeing them as much as I enjoyed making them, we cannot wait for next year! So, the final exhibit brings us to a time we would all probably rather forget....

Covid

Covid isn't a topic confined to our town, but the effects were felt here as much as they were across the world. Far from it being a time to remember it was a time where our great community came together while staying 2 metres apart.

It's the penultimate day of our tour, and today we are visiting the history of.....

The Fire Station

The town's fist fire station was created in 1938 on Priory Road, and for decades served the community as Downham's main station housing retained firefighters and their equipment. By the early 2000s the station was becoming outdated for modern fire service needs and was officially decommissioned in 2006. Rather than being demolished the old building was preserved and the Downham Market and District Heritage Society later restored it and transformed it into the Doscover Downham Heritage Centre which opened in 2016. After the Priory Road station closed a newer operational station was built at Ryston Close to better suit modern firefighting requirements. However, disaster struck in the early hours of 11 March 2014 when a major fire broke out inside the station itself and completely destroyed much of the building and a fire engine housed inside, thankfully nobody was injured. Despite the destruction emergency cover for the town continued almost immediately with the replacement appliances temporarily based nearby. The damaged buildings were demolished and replaced with a much larger more modern facility that officially opened in 2018.

As part of our edible museum for this year's festival cake it was only right to include....

The Festival

1974 and the late great Tinker Taylor used his mayoral allowance to create the first Downham Market Festival in response to concerns our great towns was declining. Now here we are over 50 years later still enjoying, family fun and great cake during a spectacular week of festivities. The events may have changed and as much as we would love to see the return of a tiddly winks tournament the same sense of joy Tinker Taylor created during the first Festival can still be felt today.
