Thinking about changing your horse’s feed for autumn or winter? 🍂

One of the most important things is not to make a sudden switch.

Horses’ digestive systems rely on consistency, so introduce new feeds gradually and give the digestive system time to adjust.

It might take a little longer, but slow and steady is usually much kinder to the gut. 🐴

Feed labels can be confusing, but a few things are worth checking before deciding what suits your horse.

Take a look at the sugar and starch levels, calorie content, recommended feeding rate, and whether the feed provides a balanced supply of vitamins and minerals at the amount you’re actually giving.

A feed can sound perfect from the marketing on the front, but the full label tells you much more.

If you’re unsure what would suit your horse, it’s always worth asking for advice rather than guessing. 🐴

Forage and grazing can provide plenty of calories while still falling short of certain vitamins and minerals.

That’s why body condition, workload, forage and the complete diet all need to be considered together.

If you have a horse that tends to lose condition every winter, now is the time to start paying attention. 🍂

Waiting until weight has already dropped can make things much harder.

Monitor body condition, keep an eye on forage intake and consider whether their current diet will still meet their needs as grazing declines and temperatures fall.

Little changes made early can make a big difference later. 🐴
