Kingfisher Cafe at Devizes Wharf

Kingfisher Cafe at Devizes Wharf Takeaway only until closing at the end of October.

31/10/2021

Right, as from tonight, Kingfisher Cafe is no more. I'm proud of what we achieved - a fully vegetarian cafe/coffee shop, all home-made, fresh, top-quality (organic and local) ingredients, local suppliers, we built a great team over the summer of 2021 and had a lot of good times. The business was successful and could have continued to grow.

We suffered from a whole host of significant health & safety issues which could not be resolved and resulted in a complete breakdown of my relationship with the landlords.

I have no idea what will happen to the building now. On handing the keys back tonight, no remedial work has been done - I sincerely hope it will be before anyone else moves in as the problems are big. If a cafe opens in there again, it will be absolutely nothing to do with me whatsoever!

My wool shop, which I am proud to be able to say is the best independent yarn shop in the south west (British Knitting Awards 2020), has moved to 2b S***f Street, SN10 1DU (07903 584151) where it will become better and better.

Our first paying customer decided he wanted to be our last paying customer in the cafe, so here is Chris with me in the middle and Ben on the other end. Ben has been part of our team all summer, we've seen his confidence and competence grow brilliantly, thank you Ben for being here and for being you 😊

Sophie took the photo, you've met her before and she too has been awesome. In fact my whole summer team has been amazing - thank you all.

**Takeaway only from today until the end of the month**

OK folks, things are all a-change down here at the wharf. From today, Kingfisher Cafe is closed :-( This is due to a whole host of problems totally beyond my control - you couldn't make it up! As a business it's been doing OK but there is just so much other "stuff" that I cannot do anything about. So the cafe is closed BUT we'll be there and the coffee machine will be on, so until we run out of coffee we will still be doing takeaway.

Important - PINS & NEEDLES remains fully open until moving to S***f Street at the end of the month. 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday, closed Sundays.

We are honoured today to have Ted the cocker spaniel in for his first ever coffee-shop visit πŸ’– At just 22 months (or was it weeks?) old, he is far too important to stay still for a portrait, so we have some action shots instead. The one where he looks like he's flaked out was actually taken just as he rolled over for a tummy rub!

Hello all, hot news....

Due to many circumstances beyond our control, Kingfisher Cafe will pretty much be closing after Sunday 3rd October :-( Its a shame because as a business, we are doing pretty well despite Covid but hey ho, some things just can't be righted.

However..... PINS & NEEDLES WOOL SHOP STAYS OPEN! We will also be keeping the coffee machine on and a few cakes in stock, so we can still serve you "takeaway" style until we run out of supplies completely.

Run for Fun Devizes - those of you who adore Bounty brownies, I've ordered some specially for our last Sunday. No obligation, if you don't turn up it will be dreadful if I have to eat them myself πŸ˜ƒ

There is further exciting news to come of Pins & Needles but I'll say more of that later......

These are great and whilst it's still fairly mild, we are going to need warmers before too much longer. We sell these for Florrie in the gift shop so pop in to see us if you can't over to Melksham to the Makers Market :-)

As it’s now Autumn, I thought it might be time to resurrect the Pocket Handwarmers πŸ‚

These will be available at The Melksham Makers' Market this Saturday, I’ll be in the usual spot next to my old chum The Secret Crocheter.

See you there!

Thursday 2nd September - we are short-staffed today so please bear with us, we might not be able to accommodate as many people inside with proper crockery as we might like, so we'll see how busy we get but please be prepared that we might have to serve "takeaway style" only. We might have a much-reduced selection of nibbles too but we'll see how we get on :-)

There is a problem with fly-tipping at the CRT facility at the far end of the wharf building. I just need to say out loud publicly that IT IS NOT US!

There's food waste (amongst many other things) being tipped down there by someone, it's disgusting and we are on to CRT about it (who have assured us they are going to take action) but the import thing is - IT ISN'T US!
