OFFICIAL STATEMENT

Over recent weeks there has been considerable discussion and speculation regarding Wonky Kettle, the Firebird Centre and the future of the project.

Until now, we have deliberately limited our public comments.

This has not been due to a lack of transparency, but because there has been an ongoing legal matter connected to the site which does not directly involve Wonky Kettle or The Larder Table Ltd. On professional advice, it would not have been appropriate for us to comment publicly whilst those matters remained ongoing.

What we can confirm is that the matters in question relate to the occupation of the building and ongoing discussions regarding its future operation.

We have not been made aware of any issues relating to fire safety, building safety or any other safety concerns that directly affect Wonky Kettle, despite reports and speculation suggesting otherwise.

For clarity, Wonky Kettle operates under The Larder Table Ltd, which is a separate legal entity from other organisations operating from the site.

For further clarity, neither Wonky Kettle nor The Larder Table Ltd is the leaseholder of the Firebird Centre building.
Whilst we had intended to operate Wonky Kettle from the site, decisions relating to the leasehold, occupation and management of the building are matters for the relevant parties involved.

As many people will already be aware, the Firebird Centre is not currently operating from the building whilst discussions regarding the future of the building continue. As a business that had planned to operate from the premises, this has inevitably impacted our own plans and timelines.

As a result, much of the information circulating online has been incomplete, inaccurate or based on assumption rather than confirmed fact.

I would like to make a few things clear-

Firstly, we take our responsibilities to members of the Wonky Founders Club extremely seriously. Every person who supported this project placed their trust in us and we do not take that trust lightly.

The funds received through the Wonky Founders Club remain within The Larder Table Ltd, completely safe.

Over the next week, we will be contacting all Founders Club members directly by email and providing a full update on the current position and next steps.

Like many of you, we are extremely disappointed by the situation that has unfolded. A huge amount of time, effort, money and passion has gone into bringing Wonky Kettle to life, and naturally the recent uncertainty has been frustrating for everyone involved.

We are currently assessing all available options and carefully considering the best path forward for the project, our founders and the wider community.

No final decision has been made regarding the future direction of the project and it would be premature to speculate further until that assessment has been completed.

Our priority is not simply opening a café as quickly as possible. Our priority is creating something sustainable, successful and built on solid foundations, giving it the greatest possible chance of long term success.

We appreciate that people have questions and we understand why. However, important decisions must be made carefully and based on verified information rather than speculation.

We would respectfully remind people that allegations, rumours and unverified claims published online can have serious consequences for individuals, families and small businesses. We welcome genuine questions and constructive discussion, but ask that information is shared responsibly and accurately.

If you have any direct questions regarding this statement, or if you are a Founders Club member and want to get in touch please contact us at [email protected]

We will respond to enquiries as soon as reasonably possible and appreciate your patience whilst communications with founders and supporters are completed.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone who has supported Wonky Kettle, believed in the vision and shown patience throughout what has been a challenging and unexpected situation.

Further updates will be provided when appropriate.

We are aware there is a lot of speculation, assumptions and misinformation currently being shared online.

We are also aware of questions regarding Founders Club memberships. All founders will receive a direct update, and all funds remain secure.

We would respectfully ask people to avoid drawing conclusions until all the facts are available.

A full statement and update will be released later today, providing clarity on the current situation, what has happened, and the steps being taken moving forward.

Thank you to everyone who has shown patience, support and understanding during what has been a challenging, complex and frankly very difficult situation.

AN UPDATE ON WONKY ☕💚

I’ve sat down to write this post a few times and honestly struggled to find the right words.

Firstly, to every single person who became a Wonky Founder, supported us, shared our posts, sent messages or simply got excited about what we were trying to build… thank you.

The last few weeks have been incredibly difficult behind the scenes and this is absolutely not the position any of us expected to find ourselves in.

Without going into detail, the situation has become far more complex than anticipated and there are ongoing matters that need to be handled carefully and properly. Commercial property matters can take time and, at this stage, I’m still not in a position to give a definitive timeline or resolution date.

What I do want to say clearly is this:

If you became a Wonky Founder, please don’t panic. We have not forgotten you and we take that responsibility incredibly seriously. We remain committed to keeping everyone updated and handling things responsibly and fairly as matters develop.

Everything we’ve done with Wonky has been done with heart, with good intention and with a genuine belief that Hilton deserves something special. A place for people to meet, eat, work, celebrate and feel welcome.

Like many of you know, this has also come during a period of personal challenges away from work and that has given me time to reflect and focus on making sure the next steps are considered and sustainable.

Whilst this is not the update any of us hoped to be giving, I remain cautiously hopeful.

We continue to work through the situation and I hope to be able to provide a more detailed update when I am able to do so.

Thank you for your patience. Thank you for your kindness. Thank you for sticking with us.

It means more than you know.

A little Wonky update ☕

We’ve always believed in being transparent with people, especially when so many of you have backed, supported and believed in Wonky Kettle from the very beginning.

The last few weeks have been incredibly difficult behind the scenes, both personally and professionally. Alongside everything happening with Wonky, I’ve also been arranging my sister’s funeral with my family.

Now we are making the final arrangements for that over the next couple of weeks, it’s helping us all think a little more clearly again about getting Wonky back on track and moving forwards positively.

The good news is that recent conversations around the legal paperwork have felt really constructive and we are continuing to work closely with The Firebird Centre to try and bring this new community hub to Hilton as soon as we possibly can.

While we still don’t have all the answers or timelines just yet, we do feel hopeful about the road ahead and I’m hopeful of being able to give everybody a more detailed update by the end of next week.

Most importantly, thank you.

To every single person who has messaged us, shared our posts, checked in on us and especially our Wonky 100 Founders... thank you for believing in us and what we’re trying to build here.

The support genuinely means more than you probably realise right now 🤍

Danny

This post is hard to write 😞

We were due to open Wonky Kettle this Friday.

I’ve made the very difficult decision to delay our opening.

We have had the sudden and unexpected news that my sister has passed away, and right now I need to take a moment to be there for my family and make sure everything is where it needs to be before we open the doors.

This also means we won’t be going ahead with the Founders soft opening tomorrow. We’ll be in touch with everyone directly as soon as we can with an update and a new opening date.

This isn’t a step back. It’s making sure we do this properly.
Wonky Kettle is still very much coming and when we open, it’ll be everything it’s meant to be.

Thank you for all the support so far ❤️

Strap in, it's a LONG READ...

One week today we open.

And if I’m honest… I’ve heard a lot over the last few weeks.

Opinions.

Speculation.

A bit of gossip.

That’s okay… and expected.

Not everyone is going to love what we do.

Not everyone likes change.

But this place has been built with heart, with care, and with the intention of creating something for the community… not just another café.

One thing that came up again and again when we first stepped into this space…
was that most people didn’t even know there was a café here.

So we’ve worked hard (very hard) to change that.
To make it visible, accessible, and somewhere people actually feel invited to walk into.

So I thought it was time to answer a few of the questions I keep hearing 👇

Bookings

We won’t be taking bookings.
We’re a relatively small café and I want people to be able to walk in, grab a table, and feel welcome… not walk past rows of reserved signs or deal with no shows.
The only exceptions will be:
• Regular community group meet ups
• Private hire outside of normal café hours
• Or if someone needs a specific table for accessibility reasons

Opening Hours

As a brand new business, our hours will likely evolve over time as we grow and learn.
For now:
Monday – Closed
Tuesday – 8 to 4
Wednesday – 8 to 5
Thursday – 8 to 5
Friday – 8 to 6
Saturday – 8 to 4
Sunday – Closed (for now)

We’ve built this around being open early for those morning coffees and breakfast fixes… while also staying open later on certain days to support the activities and community at The Firebird Centre.

Eat in or Takeaway

Both.
Most of our food and drinks will be available to take away. Just pop in or give us a call and we’ll sort you out.
We’ll also have a “to go” fridge for quick options if you’re in a rush.
Whether you’ve got 5 minutes or an hour, we’ve got you.

Pricing & Menu

We’ve worked really hard to keep things fair.
We’re not trying to be the cheapest… but we’re also not here to take the mick.

Everything is built around good ingredients, proper portions, and food that’s made with care.

Opening a hospitality business in the current climate isn’t easy, and it’s important to us that we get this right… not just for now, but for the long term.

So every decision we’ve made has been about creating something sustainable, without ever compromising on quality.

We want to be here for years, not just a few busy months.
Our menu will evolve over time, but the aim is simple…
great food, done properly, at a price that feels worth it.

Children

There’s been a bit of noise around the garden changes.
Yes, we’ve changed it. And honestly, it looks and feels so much better for it.

But we haven’t forgotten about families.

We’ve added a small barked play area with outdoor games, a mud kitchen, a sandpit and more bits to come.
There’ll also be a bouncy castle on selected days through summer.

And remember, we’re part of The Firebird Centre which already has a soft play… so this will always be a family friendly space.

Dogs

Dogs are welcome. Inside and outside.
The only thing we’ll try to do is keep the rear lounge area as a dog free zone when possible, just to give everyone an option.

If it’s busy, we’ll just use common sense and ask people politely.
We’re here to make everyone feel comfortable… and that only works if we all meet in the middle.

Full English?
Of course. It would be criminal not to.

Allergens

We’ll always do our best to accommodate.
We’re a small kitchen, so we can’t eliminate risk completely, but we’ll be as flexible and transparent as possible.

Wonky 100

We’ve had an incredible response to our Wonky 100 Founders Club.
86 memberships have now gone… which means there are only 14 left. Ever.

We’ll be emailing all members with more information over the next couple of days.
If you’ve purchased one and haven’t sent us your email address yet, please drop us a message.

At the end of the day…

This isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea.
And that’s fine.

But if you back local,
If you believe in good food,
If you like the idea of a place that actually cares…
Then I think you’re going to feel right at home here.

See you next week.

Danny ❤️
