HOUSE Rules is all about taking things back to where it belongs – great house music, real DJs and a packed Friday night on Sadler Gate.
This Friday, 19th June, marks the first of many HOUSE Rules sessions at Mr Shaw's House as we set out to bring the spirit of Derby's legendary house music scene back to where it belongs.
Joining us for our opening night is Derby house music veteran Greg Whittingham.
Greg first stepped behind the decks in 1992, becoming a resident DJ at the legendary Vines on Sadler Gate, where he spent over a decade shaping dancefloors and soundtracking Derby's thriving house music scene. Between those years he also took his talents overseas for a season DJing in Greece before returning to continue his residency.
In 1997, Greg launched and promoted the hugely popular 3Some house nights at The Loft on Friargate (formerly The Warehouse), running every Friday night through to 2000 and helping define an era when Derby's nightlife was buzzing and house music ruled the dancefloor.
Over the years he has played at some of the city's most iconic venues, including The Dial, The Conservatory, Union 1 and Union 2.
At HOUSE Rules, vinyl isn't a gimmick – it's the rule. Every record played throughout the night will be original vinyl, mixed the way house music was meant to be heard. No laptops. No playlists. Just DJs, turntables and crates full of quality house music.
Our aim is simple: to bring the energy, atmosphere and sense of occasion back to Friday nights on Sadler Gate. Good people, proper house music and a venue built around a genuine love of the culture.
For this first edition, Greg will be digging deep into the collection that helped soundtrack Derby's clubbing golden years, delivering a vinyl-only set from someone who was there the first time around.
