Eat and Mess

Eat and Mess Artisan bakery based in Deal. Award winning bespoke cakes & baked goods across East Kent & London. Welcome to Eat and Mess! Peace and loaf. E&M x

We are a neighbourhood bakery based in Deal, Kent owned by pastry chef Kate Ampomah. Trading since 2014, Kate previously worked in top bakeries in London and San Francisco before setting up her own bakery and workshop. We are a small but dedicated team of professionals and cake lovers, and we bake fresh every day for a range of trade and private customers. You can order via our website, but we als

o love a cake chat so please do get in touch if you would like something particular. You can also pick up our bakery goods each Saturday from Deal Town Market. Flours are organic and we prefer a range of heritage grains for maximum flavour. Butter is organic and our eggs are fresh and free range from local farmers. We use seasonal flavours and ingredients alongside our fresh floral decorations, inspired by the beach and country surroundings.

Brownie slabs but make them colourful! Had a flurry on these lately in the bakery… I’ve long given up trying to predict why we have some rushes on different products, but maybe easier to transport to a party than a big frosted cake? Who knows! Still cute though! 🩷💛🤎

Here’s your reminder that birthday cakes don’t have to be bright to make a statement. 🖤🪩✨

The oblong wedding cake is still giving this summer! And they’re so bloody fun to create! 26” of lemon elderflower sponge with lemon curd and lemon Swiss meringue frosting, and decorated with citrus fruits and locally grown florals from Walled Cottage Flowers.

Venue; the dreamy as ever Updown the perfect backdrop under the pergola!

Nothing better than strawberries and cream (Food and Drink at Wimbledon would agree!) for the perfect summer combination, and I feel pretty confident saying that Kentish strawberries are the elite!

Recipe is on the blog now if you want to make for yourself, but this double cream and strawberry tart with a touch of lemon thyme was very popular at the weekend!

Ahhhh back from hols and back to the hot hot kitchen! Spent longer than I’d care to admit asking baker Alexia what I was supposed to be doing today… 🤣 It’s been a glorious week in Bilbao with my little family, and I have just spent far too long wading through a lot (too many?) holiday pictures of my kids, and as usual, not a single one of me or my husband ☺️, in order to find the last cake pic I took!

A never fail to impress, pink red ruffle cake modelled so wonderfully by the gorgeous Poppy from her birthday party! And guys- it’s hot hot hotttttt so I’ll keep saying it- keep your cakes in the fridge for as long as you can to avoid melty ruffles or wilted florals!

Back at the market on Saturday, and we’re doing the baking so you don’t have to… got some bangers coming to the table for the weekend!

I mean, how could the occasion not be marked with a throwback to a Taylor Swift cake?! Never not the playlist of choice in the bakery, to the disappointment of some and joy of others! ☺️💖

The most gorgeous wedding cake brief from the verrry cool A & J’s Margate wedding last weekend. Turner skies, disco balls, beautiful blooms, and an absolute mountain of pretty darn delicious cake (chocolate rye, lemon elderflower and raspberry rose since you didn’t ask!). Not featured, the hottest day ever and very frayed nerves… nothing like the sheer terror of trying to construct a frosted cake in rising temperatures!

Cake in the heat. Not a great combo! Just a friendly reminder that our cakes are made with an inordinate quantity of butter in the Swiss meringue frosting, which gets verrrry melty in this temperature! Top tips:

Air con already on in the car please! And store out of direct sunlight such as a flat footwell for the journey.

We will be handing your cakes over straight from the walk in fridge (my absolute favourite place rn) so they will have been well chilled in advance. Please put your cake straight into a fridge at the other end.

We will hand your cake over in a lidded box, and please take care not to crush the sides in with your hands when carrying- we always suggest placing hands on the bottom to carry, and this avoids any potential crushing at any time, but they’re even more delicate in this time of crazy heat!

Finally, hooray for sunshine celebrations and excellent cake! Thanks and stay cool- if you need me I’ll be in the walk in! 😎

Summer weddings 2026… proving to be all about the single tier oversized dessert!

The most fragrant Kentish berries for this East London wedding pavlova at the weekend, covered in stabilised vanilla chantilly, and around 5kg of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. Or if something stronger is your bag, a giant coffee soaked tiramisu cake at the Turner in Margate. Both totally show stopping, and top perk for the pav was getting to secretly see the wedding festivities in full swing as I was setting up that afternoon! Usually all the BTS is going on that morning before the flowers are set up or the tables are dressed- so it’s a nice change to see the hard work in all its glory!
