Today we remember Thomas Melody, who passed away on 21st April 2011, aged 91.

Born on 26th August 1919 and raised in the fields of Mayo in the west of Ireland, Thomas was a man cut from a different cloth. A father of ten – eight boys and two girls – he worked tirelessly to provide for his family. Strong as an ox, with a heart just as big, he was the definition of hard work, resilience and loyalty.

He wasn’t just a grandfather… he was a guiding hand. Alongside his wife Eileen, he played a huge part in raising his second eldest grandson, Dayle – passing down the values that still live on in this pub today.

Ten years ago, when the Admiral Keppel was renamed The Farrier, it wasn’t just a name change… it was a tribute. A way of keeping Thomas’s spirit alive, in a place built on community, graft, and good people – everything he stood for.

And for those that may not know… the swinging sign outside isn’t just a design. It’s a photograph of Thomas himself, carefully turned into a digital image – a lasting reminder that he’s still very much part of this place, watching over it every day.

So today, we raise a glass to Thomas Melody.
A true family man.
A grafter.
And the heart behind The Farrier.

Never forgotten
