Some dishes remind you of childhood, some remind you of holidays.

And some remind you of your mum trying to impress guests with a prawn cocktail in a glass bowl. We’re bringing that energy back.

We know it’s old‑fashioned. We know it’s retro. We tried to keep it simple. We really did. But then someone said, “What if we put a tempura prawn on it?” And honestly, we think they were right.

The humble Prawn Cocktail... making a comeback appearance on our October Menu.

One table. Everyone together.

Some Sundays call for more than a quick meal at home.

They call for a beautifully prepared roast, crisp golden potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, rich gravy and a table full of people you actually want to spend the afternoon with.

Just sit back and make the most of having everyone around the same table.

Reservations recommended, walk-ins welcome. 3 courses for £35.50. Sharing Board (2 guests) for £46.

Bring the family. Bring the grandparents. Bring the ones you haven't seen for far too long. We'll take care of the rest.

INTERESTING CULINARY FACTS Pt. 4

The word “restaurant” actually comes from a broth.

Before “restaurant” meant somewhere you went for a three-course meal, the word had a much simpler meaning.

In 18th-century France, “restaurants” were restorative broths: nourishing soups that were believed to revive and strengthen people.

The word comes from the French “restaurer,” meaning “to restore” or “renew.”

These restorative broths became so popular that establishments began selling them specifically to people looking for something nourishing and revitalising.

Eventually, the word evolved from describing the broth itself to describing the places where it was served, and the modern restaurant was born.

Not a bad legacy for a bowl of soup.

It went from reviving weary travellers to naming millions of places where we gather to eat, celebrate and make memories.

📖 Did You Know?

Most people know our restaurant as Astley Bank or Othello's...It is actually called Othello's and its name was inspired by a remarkable piece of history.
..but have you ever wondered why?

Hidden within Astley Bank Hotel is an original stained glass window depicting the tragic story of one of William Shakespeare's most famous plays.

The window tells the tale of Othello, a respected general who secretly marries Desdemona before leaving Venice to command the Venetian army. Through lies and manipulation, his trusted ensign, Iago, convinces him that Desdemona has been unfaithful. Consumed by jealousy, Othello makes a devastating mistake, only discovering the truth when it's far too late.

At the top of the stained glass are the words:

"Spake of disastrous chances."

A poignant reminder of the tragic consequences that can arise from deception, misunderstanding and misplaced trust.

Next time you visit Astley Bank Hotel, take a moment to look up and admire this beautiful window, it's more than just a work of art; it's a piece of literary history woven into the fabric of our hotel.

INTERESTING CULINARY FACTS Pt. 3

The sandwich was born because someone didn’t want to stop gambling.

According to the famous story, John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, was so engrossed in a game of cards that he didn’t want to leave the table for a meal.

So he asked for meat to be served between two slices of bread, allowing him to eat without putting his cards down.

And just like that… a lunchtime classic was born. 🥪

Whether the story is completely true or not, one thing is certain: the sandwich got its name from the Earl of Sandwich; and gambling makes for a much better origin story.

So next time you grab a sandwich for lunch, remember:

You could be holding the result of one man’s refusal to take a snack break.

There are some people in a hotel who work tirelessly behind the scenes, quietly making sure everything is ready for our guests, and our housekeeping team are some of those people. ❤️

They don’t always get the recognition they deserve, but without them, the hotel simply couldn’t run.

In this picture, some of them are taking a well-earned moment to rest during a busy shift… in 32°C heat!☀️

It’s easy to see a spotless room and forget the hard work that goes into making it that way. So today, we want to say a huge thank you to our amazing housekeepers.

You might think your hard work, dedication and determination go unnoticed, but they don’t.

You’re an incredibly important part of the Astley Bank family, and we’re so grateful for everything you do.

🍽️ INTERESTING CULINARY FACTS – Pt. 2

Humans are the only species that cooks their food.

Over thousands of years, cooking didn’t just make our food tastier, it helped shape the evolution of our species.

Cooking softens food and makes it easier to chew and digest, meaning our ancestors could get more energy from the same amount of food with less time spent chewing.

Over generations, this helped reduce the need for large jaws, big teeth and powerful chewing muscles. At the same time, the extra energy available from cooked food helped support our increasingly energy-hungry brains.

In other words, cooking changed what we ate, how we ate it and, ultimately, what we became.

So the next time you sit down to a beautifully cooked meal, remember: you’re enjoying a culinary tradition that may have helped make us human. 🍽️🔥
