The leaves of the Hawthorn are also edible, and had the nickname of 'bread and cheese' in the middle ages, not because of the taste, but because they were 'basic foodstuff.'

It is best to eat the leaves in spring and early summer where they are described as having a nutty flavour and make an excellent addition to salads 🍃

Hawthorn is a common shrub, most often planted in hedgerows. Its flowers appear in May, giving the hawthorn another name - maythorn. Here's some tips on how to identify hawthorn.
