"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. 🎀

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. 💗

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

💗 This year, Sam took on running, cycling and swimming challenges to help raise awareness for CoppaFeel!

After being diagnosed with cancer at 19 and later undergoing a double mastectomy, Sam chose to celebrate her body and encourage others to know their normal.

We're honoured that Sam shared her story as part of Tickled Pink.💕

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

Keep it up Tom!

Keep it up Tom!

A big thank you to Tom from our Cwmbran store for helping a partially-sighted customer with her shopping and then fixing a glitch on her Apple Watch.

Tom said: "The lady came in with her guide dog and just needed a bit of help, so I was only too happy to help. She had her shopping list in her head and we just went round the aisles and I picked the items she wanted and put them in a basket which I had on my arm. She was a lovely lady. We just chatted about all sorts of things – general chit chat really.

"When we got to the checkout she was having a bit of trouble with her Apple Watch and couldn't pay, so I suspended the transaction, got her a cup of tea from the cafe, as she was getting a little stressed out, and sorted the watch out for her. I'll do anything to help customers and colleagues."

Customer manager Cali said: "Tom is a great colleague. With the lady he was patient, clear in how he spoke to her, and gave her the time that she needed. He didn't rush her, he chatted to her and got to know her. The customer was delighted with Tom and left the store very happy. His kindness made her day."

Well done Kath!

Well done Kath!

Kath from our Cwmbran store is a real superhero in the eyes of a little boy whose Spider-Man balloon suddenly popped while he was out shopping with his mum.

The service team leader saw how upset he was so quickly got him a replacement helium one which she paid for herself. She said: "The little boy loves Spider-Man and was so upset. When I gave him the new balloon he had a big smile on his face. He was so happy. It made my day, it did. About half an hour later one of my colleagues said that the mum had left me some flowers which was lovely, but she really didn't have to. The world's not the greatest at the moment, so it's nice to be kind."

The store's customer manager Cali said: "The mum was over the moon with Kath's patience and kindness towards her son and said she had completely turned her frustrating shopping experience into a positive one. Kath is a true example of what outstanding customer service and kindness is all about. We are so proud to have Kath as part of the team." Kath has been rewarded through Asda's internal recognition scheme to thank her for her kindness.

I went to the Grange Hospital to meet with Dannielle who is the Emergency Department Sister to donate Nappies, body wash and sponges.

Many of the children the Grange care for arrive unexpectedly during distressing and challenging circumstances.

In some cases, families may not have access to essential items during an Emergency Department visit or subsequent hospital admission. Donations of basic care items can make a significant difference to a child's comfort and wellbeing during these difficult times.

A big thank you to our amazing long-serving colleagues who have each worked 25 years at Asda Cwmbran, clocking up 250 years of service between them.

Shout outs to Sue, Gareth, Julie, Mandy, Jenny, Claire, Angela, Christine, Mags and Sue who isn’t pictured as she couldn’t make it to the Big Asda Celebration at the Vale resort in Cardiff.

We'd like to thank them all for their hard work and dedication and hope they all had an amazing day.
