The Lanner falcon is a species of falcon that lives across the African continent and into some parts of south-eastern Europe. Lanner falcons have much longer wings than their close cousin, the Peregrine Falcon. These long wings allow the bird to pick up thermals from the ground to naturally lift and maintain them in the air!

Here’s Cricket showing these beautiful wings off.

Did you know the Laughing Kookaburra is the voice behind the environment of a popular Disney movie?

If you’ve ever watched Tarzan, you might’ve heard a few jungle sounds, including what seems to be monkeys calling out. However, this booming call belongs to the Laughing Kookaburra instead!

This call is made by an individual or a group of Kookaburra in a territorial display, warning off predators or rivals. It’s very close to that of a loud laughter, hence the species name! Fry here always calls out to customers walking by his aviary, reminding you that he is not going to share!

Have you heard a Kookaburra call before? 👀

Front row seats in our flying demonstrations come with a close-up of our beautiful vultures when they are participating!

Radagast and Lobelia love to hop along the front perches.

Here is Radagast, our Rüppells Griffon Vulture, showing off one of his favourite parts of our demonstrations.

⚠️ Warning – This video contains birds feeding off a carcass. Although this is completely natural, it may be upsetting to some viewers.

🍖 Carcass feed update 🍖

As many of our customers will know we often hold a carcass feed event to help educate on the importance of vultures to the environment and other species and to raise funds for vulture conservation. In 2027 our Carcass Feed event will be back! One at the beginning of the year (date still to be set) and one on International Vulture Awareness Day.

Next year we will be introducing Lobelia our beautiful home bred Eurasian Griffon Vulture to the mix and so we held a practice Carcass Feed last week to see how well she fitted in. We are thrilled to say that she was a star and had an equal amount of enthusiasm for the carcass and respect for the other birds. This will mean that next year our carcass feed will include Lobelia the Eurasian Griffon Vulture, Radagast the Rüppell’s Griffon Vulture, Zulu the Bateleur Eagle, Stanley the White Stork and Guinness the Pied Crow!

Keep an eye on our socials for the date of our first carcass feed event of 2027.

*all carcasses are donated to the centre

Our next available ‘An Evening with Owls’ event is on the 6th of December ❄️

Join us for a nocturnal flying demonstration on the 6th of December with our owls. The event will be kicking off at 6pm with soup and a roll. Once sufficiently warmed up, you will be led down into the centre to meet and hold some of our owls! After the handling session you will head to the flying field which will be partially illuminated. Then sit back and watch some of our beautiful owls flying silently in the dark and learn all about this fantastic family of birds. It certainly is a completely different way to experience these very special birds!

Whoo’s coming? 🦉

Bookings must be taken through the centre (Thurs-Sun between 10am-4.30) or alternatively you can PM us a contact number, and we will handle your booking from there.

A bird’s Pennaceous feathers, otherwise known as their flight feathers, are designed to provide flight and waterproofing for the bird.

This is achieved by the vane of the feather which is the smooth surface area that branches out on both sides of the central shaft. The vane is made up of multiple barbs, containing smaller filaments called barbules. These barbules lock together like Velcro and many connected barbs create the smooth surface of the feather.

This is now the perfect feather surface for wind to push into, to lift or propel the bird. Additionally, it provides a waterproofing cover for the bird to keep it dry!

Here is a Bald Eagle feather with a few water droplets on, showing how well these connected barbs do their job at waterproofing.

Meet our newest member of the team, Diego!

Diego is a 16 week old Harris Hawk and over the last few days has been settling into his new home.

It is important at this point of his training, that he builds a strong trust bond with his falconers, gets accustomed with daily routines and is gradually introduced to lots of new sights and sounds. In just 3 days, he is relaxed around people and taking most things in his stride.

We can’t wait to see how he progresses over the next few weeks and we look forward to him joining our flying team in the near future!
