Ryan's Cookie Box

Ryan's Cookie Box Taking Over The World One Cookie At A Time Welcome to Ryan's Cookie Box! It is managed by a young man called Ryan, who just happens to have Down Syndrome. Enjoy! X
(235)

It does exactly what it says on the tin - a Not For Profit Charity Honesty box at the top of our driveway, selling home made cookies and bakes. He is ably supported by the Cookie Box Team - his assistant Baker, his assistant Baker's Husband, Smelly Big Brother David, Big Sister Gym Bunny Nicki, Big Sister Writer in Residence Laura and Elder Statesman Grampa. We bake most days according to work and

family commitments, and make whatever takes our fancy, although we do have a few staples - Chocolate Chip Cookies, Brownies and Chocolate Goop, Lemon Drizzle and White Goop, Endorphin Bars, Gluten Free Carrot Cake....
When a fresh batch is baked and labelled, we put up a post on FB to let you know what we have, and then put up a few packets at a time in the Cookie Box until they are all sold. The way it works is that we ask you to cover the cost of ingredients and packaging, and then add a donation - and when you open the door of The Cookie Box you will find a sheet that explains it all. But by way of a quick explanation, we have a colour coded system - if you look at the label on the packet, there will be a green, yellow or red dot. Bakes with green dots cost £1.10 to make so you cover that AND THEN ADD A DONATION. Bakes with yellow dots cost £1.30 to make so you cover that AND THEN ADD A DONATION. Bakes with red dots cost £1.50 to make so you cover that AND THEN ADD A DONATION. And to give you a wee steer, on average, each packet takes 15 minutes to make. All the donations go to the Charity of The Month - and the name of the charity will be on the packet. And to date, over the 5 (almost 6) years that Ryan has been running his Cookie Box, he has raised over £50,000 for charity. The Cookie Box itself is a little on the quirky side, and we revamp it every few weeks, so it always has some daft old theme - which gives us a bit of fun. And last year we put together a flat pack beehive, called 'Ryan's Jam Jar Open Here', and it stocks home made jellies and chutneys - mostly made from the apples which we are so kindly donated from far and near. The page records all the details of where your hard earned cash goes. It is also full of Tosh and Twaddle - so if you have nothing better to do, or are having a lengthy session on the throne, you can read about The Big House, Hedgehogs, Jummy C the Squirrel, Squealer the Cat and the assistant baker's wandering ruminations. Don't say we didn't warn you! And thank you for dropping by - virtually or otherwise. Oh - and you might like to know where we are, and how to get here:

Our address is 100A Drumnaconagher Rd, Crossgar, Downpatrick, BT30 9JJ

And your best and easiest way to come is from Ballynahinch, so-

Coming in to Ballynahinch from the Belfast side, take the B7 road to Crossgar. Drive along there for about one and a half miles - you will pass St Colman's School on your left, and you will go over a tight little bend at a bridge. If you keep going, the road goes into a long, left handed, uphill bend, and the Drumnaconagher Rd is on that bend on the right hand side. We are half a mile down on the right - the sign is on the roadside, and the Cookie Box just through the gate. Look forward to seeing you!

Perfection from the Scribulator who spent a full hour before lunch on his menu board.

A good wee bunch for tomorrow - lots of packaging still to do this evening.

We've been having a fun filled time in a Sweaty Betty Kitchen over the last couple of days....so more of a focus on the lesser chocolatey stuff just at the minute, with Gym Bunny Granola Bars and Peanut Butter Cookies Sandwiched with Chocolate all packed up and stored down in the coolest corner of the house.

But rumour has it that it that temperatures are starting to drop tomorrow so we'll switch tactics then.

The plan is to open on Sunday, when it will be a comfortable 18 C, and a 28% chance of rain - so Northern Ireland Summer is back.

And the Scribe will have his menu up later on tomorrow....between sneezes that it. He has a little bit of hayfever, but embraces it fully with gigantic, bone rattling, house shaking sneezes, followed up with a tortured, brave croak .....'Hayfever disease', followed by a long, tortured, brave sigh.

Little Pots of Lemon Curd this morning, going to chill in the fridge and contemplate life until the weekend.....with all leftovers to The Baker Boy, because this is one of his favourites.

Made with Stevie-Down-the-Road's free roaming eggs at the Blue Bungalow , and lemons all the way from Lidl Northern Ireland.

We're open remarkably early this morning, with a well filled Cookie Box - we made extra little portions when we were baking for the Mini Hampers (Endorphins, lemon drizzle, blondies, brownies with goop, german biscuits, butter biscuits, sticky Jimmy's, and raspberry and white chocolate cake), so they are all there. Also a good haul of Stonebridge and Ballymaloe Sausage Rolls, and just for a little change, some Tiramisu (no raw egg) in makeshift fridge boxes - if you could put the lid back on nice and squarely when yo have finished, that would be really helpful.

All profits to Sands - baby loss charity.

Wishing you all a wonderful Father's Day.

Can we send out a GIANT thank you to everybody who called today to pick up their Crazy Like A Fool Daddy Cool Father's Day Mini Hampers.

I always love these days - customers who over the years have become good friends, and all the craic and banter as folk call in and collect their goodies.

And to top it all off, we were treated to a delicious tea from Morrison’s Crossgar - still some sausages left for Ryan's breakfast in the morning.
So thank you all again - the final tally came in at just over £500, which is rather fabulous.

We have sausage rolls cooling as we speak, a collection of extras from the mini hampers.....and a few Tiramisu that we made this evening just for the fun of it.
So we thought we would open The Cookie Box early tomorrow - we're thinking 9:00 am, and we'll stock it all up. The Tiramisu will sit on ice packs to keep them chilled, and we'll just let things roll until everything is sold.

With all profits to Sands - baby loss charity.

Brownies with Goop and Sprinkles - ready for wrapping for the Crazy Like a Fool Daddy Cool Father's Day Mini Hampers.

We've made a few extra of most things to put up in The Cookie Box on Sunday morning (Father's Day) - and the plan is to do sausage rolls as well, and perhaps a couple of other bits and pieces.

But today is about making Lemon Drizzle Puds, Raspberry and White Chocolate Cake - and perhaps some Fifteens - we'll just see how time goes.

On Tuesday we were invited to the Patton Class End of Year Bash at Mitchell House School.

It's hard to believe that it is 2 years since Team Patton started marketing and selling initially Pattons Pounds (homemade chocolate coins), and more recently Endorphin Bars - at first from the school itself, but later from their own honesty box, custom made by the local Men's Shed - not to mention pop up shops at The City Airport and also at Inverary Community Centre.

And it has been a real honour to have been part of it all.....and I just love the way that it has evolved into such a community project with all the learning and life skills that go with it.

Mitchell House is a very special school - and The Patton Class are a super special group of youngsters, supported by an equally super special teacher and support team. And their most recent profits - a magnificent £314.19 - was donated to Mencap.

One other member that needs to be mentioned is Raia - their labradoodle assistance Og - really sweet, and is there to provide a calming presence, and help pupils (and maybe staff) feel happy and safe.
And a great job she does too.

Have a great summer Team Patton!

Meanwhile, back at The Big House, Brownies with Goop, Bloopwaffle Blondies and Endorphin Bars have been made ready for the Crazy Like a Fool Daddy Cool Father's Day Mini Hampers.

Ryan's Classic Endorphin Bars have a particulaly pleasing cross section this time - probably because we invested in a scary looking two handled cheese knife, which is also good for chopping up traybakes - but hopefully not fingers, because both hands are on a handle and away from the blade.
It's a piece of work though.

So that's us all up to date for now. The lemons are out for tomorrow - and some raspberries - and there is one lonely Mini Hamper left if anyone hasn't bought their Father's Day present yet.

Night night.
