Yep, I’m a bit late to this one because of the Butlins Saga…
But I opened my news app this morning and saw that Carlsberg is shutting down the iconic Marston’s Brewery in Burton, putting over 300 hard-working people out of a job!
Nearly 200 years of British brewing history wiped out, and 310 livelihoods put on the line - all so a massive corporate giant can balance its spreadsheet and centralise production. 🤬
And it got me thinking about the complete hypocrisy in how this country operates...
🤔 How is it that giant multinational conglomerates can buy up historic British institutions, throw hundreds of local workers onto the scrapheap, gut our heritage, and the media just shrugs it off and calls it "corporate restructuring"?
🤔 Yet, if an independent pub landlord charges an extra 20p a pint - just to keep the heating on, cover a 300% energy bill hike, skyrocketing business rates, and b**r duty - we get treated like pantomime villains who have personally kicked Santa in the b*llocks!
Look at the double standard:
🍺 Global B**r Giant: Wipes out 310 local jobs, axes nearly two centuries of brewing tradition, and shuts a historic site to max out shareholder value.
Response: "An unfortunate necessity of market shifts and corporate efficiency."
🍻 Independent Local Pub: Works 70-hour weeks making 12p profit a pint just to keep the doors open and the community alive.
Response: "Rip-off merchant! Why is your b**r so expensive?!"
It’s the same old story. Massive corporate suits gut real communities, leave local families facing redundancy, and somehow the small independent pub owner trying to survive still ends up taking the blame for everything wrong in society.
My thoughts are with the 310 workers in Burton today! 😢
They’re the ones paying the real price, while the board members continue to count their massive f*cking bonuses!
What do you think? Is this closure something we should just accept as progress? Or should we be fighting back against these corporate monopolies wiping out our British brewing history ? 👇👇👇
