📢 A vital next step in saving The Oddfellows Arms is here and we need your support!

The campaign to bring The Oddfellows Arms into community ownership is reaching an important stage, and we'd like to invite you to a Community Consultation Meeting to hear the latest updates and show your support.

Join Higham CBS and Higham Parish Council at St Peter's Church on Wednesday 7th October at 7pm. The team will provide an update on progress since last year's appeal hearing, explain the next steps in negotiations to purchase the pub, and share details of the planned community share issue that will help fund its refurbishment.

You can find out more about the project, ask questions and discover how you can get involved through your skills, experience, or investment in the share offer.

📬 You may spot one of our leaflets arriving through your door soon, so please help us spread the word and encourage friends and neighbours to come along.

We’re not just trying to save a building. We’re trying to bring back a place for the whole community.

A place you can walk to.
A place where you know the people behind the counter.
A place where you bump into friends.
A place where local groups can meet.
A place where visitors feel welcome.
A place where the village comes together.

This is the future we want to create for the Oddies. ❤️

💒 Wedding receptions at the Oddies created memories that lasted a lifetime.

Over the years, the Oddfellows Arms has played host to so many special occasions, where family and friends came together to celebrate the start of a new chapter.

This photo captures one such happy day at the Oddies, a reminder of the important role the pub has played in bringing our community together. From the decorations and celebrations to the stories shared around the tables, the Oddies has been part of countless cherished memories.

As we work to bring the pub into community ownership, we're proud to look back at moments like these and remember just how much the Oddies means to so many people.

💭 Do you have your own Oddies memories? We'd love to hear your stories! Share your memories in the comments below and help us build a picture of the Oddies through the years.

📸 Even better, do you have any photos? We'd love to see them! Please send your pictures to [email protected], along with a brief description telling us who's in the photo, when it was taken, and any memories associated with it.

🌞 Imagine this... you are sitting in the pub garden on a warm summer afternoon, enjoying a refreshing c***r in the sunshine while chatting with friends and watching village life go by.

🫖 Imagine this... you are about to make a cup of tea when you realise you’ve run out of milk. But don’t worry! You can pop into the shop at the Oddies, pick up what you need.

🍴Imagine this... you don’t fancy cooking tonight, so you walk round to the Oddies for a delicious meal instead, with no washing up required!

💬Imagine this... you have friends coming to visit, so you meet them at the Oddies for a drink, a bite to eat and a good catch-up without anyone having to drive miles.

✒️ Imagine this... you have a local group to organise, so you meet in the community space at the Oddies and spend the evening planning, chatting and getting things done together.

☕ Imagine this... you are new to the village and pop into the Oddies for a coffee, where you soon find yourself chatting to someone who makes you feel right at home.

🍺 Imagine this... you have your village pub back.

Thriving, inclusive and resilient rural communities 📈

📣Earlier this week, we were delighted to launch our new five-year strategy, shaped in partnership with our members, staff and trustees.

Over the next five years, we will work alongside communities across the UK to ensure community ownership continues to provide practical, sustainable solutions to the challenges facing rural areas.

As our Chief Executive, James Alcock, explains: “By strengthening community businesses, growing a stronger movement and continuing to evolve as an organisation, we believe rural communities can thrive, become more inclusive and build greater resilience.”

Discover our vision and ambitions for 2026-2031 and learn how we plan to support more communities to take control of their future.

✨ Whether it was a 50th, a 60th or another milestone birthday, the Oddfellows Arms was where memories were made. ✨

The Oddies has been at the heart of our community for generations. These photos from a 50th and a 60th birthday celebration are just a glimpse of the special moments shared within its walls.

Let's bring the Oddfellows Arms back to life so future generations can create their own memories, celebrate their milestones, and keep our community spirit alive.

In an age of loneliness, meeting face-to-face matters more than ever. ❤️

We can message someone in seconds. We can video call a friend hundreds of miles away. We can scroll through hundreds of people's lives without speaking to a single one of them.

And yet, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics, almost 1 in 4 adults in Great Britain (23%) report feeling lonely often, always or some of the time. Among 30–49-year-olds, that rises to 28%.

That's why places where we can simply be together matter.

👋 A place where you can walk in on your own and find someone to talk to.
🏠 A place where you bump into a neighbour.
💼 A place where you can meet a friend after work.
🏡A place where a new resident can start to feel part of the village.
📖 A place where a book club, walking group, craft group or quiz team can come together.
📱 A place where you can have a proper conversation, not a WhatsApp conversation.

That's why we need the Oddies.

Because community doesn't happen online. It happens when we open the door, walk in and say, “Hello.” And that's the future we want for the Oddfellows Arms️

Whilst we definitely won't be able to beat those prices today (if only you could still get a three-course meal for £6.25! 😲🍽️), it's wonderful to look back at a special moment in the pub's history and remember what made the Oddies such an important part of our community.

💭 Do you remember this time? Did you visit the pub when it reopened, enjoy a meal there, celebrate a special occasion? We'd love to hear your stories! Share your memories in the comments below and help us build a picture of the Oddies through the years.
