Left hand operation complete! βœ‹πŸΌβœ…

Followed by a mandatory Toby Carvery breakfast!! 🧐🍳

That’s 3 surgeries in one month officially DONE. Safe to say, I’m quite happy to see the back of September! πŸ˜‚

🐾 4 weeks into rehabbing my right hand
🐾 Acute post-op recovery now underway for my left
πŸ“š Full steam ahead with my MSc!

For Hoof & Hound Veterinary Physiotherapy, this means I’ll be taking the next 6–8 weeks away from clinical practice to give both hands the time they need to recover properly (apparently physios have to follow their own rehab advice too… πŸ™„πŸ˜‚).

Then it’s time to get back to what I love. ❀️

My aim is to reopen the books from January 2027, welcoming back existing patients and hopefully meeting plenty of new horses, dogs and their humans along the way. 🐴🐢

A little recovery, a lot of MSc work, and then Hoof & Hound is back for 2027. πŸ’ͺ🏼

πŸŒ™ August Tip #3 – Darker Nights

As the evenings start drawing in, it can be tempting to shorten those evening walks or skip them altogether! Same with your evening rides 🐎

Keeping your pet moving regularly is important for maintaining mobility, muscle strength and joint health β€” particularly for older animals or those managing ongoing musculoskeletal conditions. 🐾

If you’re heading out as the light fades, make sure both you and your pet are visible with reflective or hi-vis gear, and choose well-lit, familiar routes where possible.

πŸ‚ Darker nights don’t have to mean less movement β€” just a little more planning!

What do you see here? Nothing? πŸ‘€ Look a little closer… This pup has fascial restriction through the lumbar region β€” and one of the clues is hiding in plain sight: in her coat pattern

🐾 Facia is a continuous layer of connective tissue that surrounds and connects muscles, organs and other structures around the body. When it becomes less mobile or restricted, it can affect normal tissue glide and movement.

So what can we do???
Regular movement, appropriate exercise, varied activities and good posture all help maintain healthy tissue mobility. Where restriction is present, veterinary physiotherapy can use techniques such as manual therapy, soft-tissue work and targeted exercises to help restore comfortable movement and tissue mobility.

Keep them moving. Keep them comfortable. 🐾 With strength in every stride!

πŸ‚ As the weather cools, a good warm-up becomes just as important for our animals as it is for us! ❀️

Whether it's a gentle walk, some groundwork or a more demanding exercise session, taking a few minutes to gradually prepare the body can help support comfortable movement and reduce unnecessary strain.

🌧️ With changing weather and slippery ground on the way, remember to adapt your exercise, take your time and listen to your animal.

Christmas come early? πŸ˜πŸ‘πŸΌ

While taking a short break from practicing while I rehab my wrist from my CTR surgery, I'll be trialling the Therapevo Gamma Class IV Laser. I've got an eager little potato 🐢 with an ongoing iliopsoas strain ready to help with the research 🧐πŸ₯°

πŸ‚ With autumn in sight, it won't be long before the evenings get darker, the ground gets wetter and we're all questioning why we ever thought owning animals was a good idea when there's that much mud involved! πŸ˜‚πŸŒ§οΈ

But seasonal changes can affect how our animals move, exercise and cope with their environment. So get prepared, think ahead, and keep your eyes peeled for some autumn movement & wellbeing tips from Hoof & Hound VP 🐾
