The cake cabinet is bare. The machine is shut down. After 121,603 cups of coffee we are hanging up our aprons. The last few days and weeks have been humbling. The kind words, presents and cards from so many of our friends and customers has been much more than we expected. Please be assured we read every word and appreciate every gift. It’s been an honour and a privilege to be part of the amazing phenomenon that was The Globe. We created it together and it will forever hold a special place in all our hearts. We are not gone entirely. The bricks & mortar element may pass into history but we will be keeping our social media accounts alive and hosting pop up cake events from time to time. Come see us there soon. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts ❤️

Feeling emotional as we enter our last week. We’ve had an amazing time and met so many wonderful people. There’s still a week to come see us and enjoy The Globe experience. Either way we are not leaving town and look forward to seeing you again soon ❤️

People keep asking why we are closing and this sums it up pretty well. We have always been proud of the fact that The Globe is a place for everyone. It’s one of the reasons it’s called The Globe. It’s obviously a complex & multifaceted decision but we can’t stay open and avoid putting up our prices significantly. Doing so would exclude some of our community and we don’t want that. It wouldn’t be The Globe if only the wealthy can afford to drink & eat there. We have worked unbelievably long hours to keep this unique corner of the world going but we can no longer sacrifice our own family life for this amazing space. For most of us money is simply an account of how many hours you worked for someone else to feed yourself & your loved ones. We could have looked at funding and other social enterprise structures but we are fiercely independent and autonomous. Accepting funding is a Faustian bargain and would also inevitably change this space for the worse. . We would rather close now with our principles and integrity intact. We will leave The Globe as a happy memory for many and an example of what could be done…

I don’t really feel like talking about coffee today. I keep looking around and imagining if someone said everyone in Cleethorpes & Grimsby had to leave their homes within 24 hours - how terrifying it would be, how chaotic and difficult. Then I imagine how much worse it would be if 50% of the population were children and faced all the challenges that Gaza has faced. The situation in Israel & Gaza is complex with multiple competing actors and narratives. But not everything is complex. We weep for families that have lost loved ones. We don’t actually give a damn what language they speak, what colour their skin is or what god they worship because they’re all human. Every loss of human life is a tragedy for them and those that love them. Nobody is unworthy of compassion. Antisemitism is disgusting. Islamophobia is disgusting. Every child deserves to grow up safe and nurtured and loved.

Tonight ❤️

The final poetry slam to take place at The Globe will be held on Wednesday 11th October. Doors open at 7pm for a 7:30 start. As it’s our last one there’s no tickets and all welcome. It’s sure to be a special night and we may run out of seating so if you’re younger then be prepared to stand. Do not be sad, however, the wonderful (without whom there would be no slam) is seeking an alternative venue so this special event can outlive its formative home. More details hopefully on the 11th. It’ll be a truly special night so please join us to raise the roof and make it a night to remember. The Globe is open til 27th October so if you can’t make the slam you can still come see us. Make the effort if you can. When you tell the story of your life you’ll be able to say ‘I was there…’

Even the chopping board is happy. We are so glad we opened today. We’ve had a day of lovely customers with a great team behind the counter. There’s just over two weeks until we close on 27th October and whilst we know it’s the right decision there’s definitely things we will miss. The people most of all ❤️
